Professional Tech-Class II: Multilingual Services Bilingual Student and Family Advocate

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent

Summary Statement: The Multilingual Services Student and Family Advocate will instruct, support, and serve as an advocate for students with limited English proficiency under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent. This position focuses on students and families new to the country and/or the English Language.

Essential Functions:

Works individually or with groups of students identified as emergent bilinguals for a variety of grade levels in order to improve their mastery of English. Using state and district assessments, grades, and teacher feedback, creates intervention plan to serve each qualified multilingual student.

Provides academic primary language support for students who have a heritage language other than English. Preferred languages: Spanish and/or Russian

Communicates and advocates regularly with classroom teachers, administrators, and Special Services staff regarding student progress, concerns, and questions. Attends and collaborates on BIT and/or IEP meetings for multilingual students and provides relevant documentation as needed.

Communicates with parents regarding the progress of students upon the direction or under the support of the Assistant Superintendent. Facilitates conversations and events with families to build strong school/ family connections in order to promote student achievement, equity, and inclusion. Family connections may include home visits.

Provides translation for district documents.

Assists and interprets in family/school conferences.

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent, supports state-required, mandated testing for all multilingual students.

Maintains notes and records of student progress in multiple educational data bases as needed.

In collaboration with Special Services and classroom teachers, works to ensure the district is in compliance with required OSPI guidelines as well as accommodations for multilingual students.

Supervises students and uses program data to inform instruction, monitors progress, and shares information with families, teachers and administrators as requested.

Supports a positive school environment that celebrates, respects and values diversity, where learning is made relevant and meaningful to students of various cultures.

Participates in activities and discussions that lead to increased cultural competence.

Other related duties in support of students, special services, and the school district.

Professional Qualifications:

Minimum educational requirements: AA degree or equivalent credits, or passing the Paraprofessional Praxis. BA/BS degree preferred.

Instructional paraprofessionals, as defined by the state per WAC 179-01-020, are required to complete the Fundamental Course of Study and General Certificate per the state guidelines.

Experience working with children in an educational setting, preferably delivering English Language Development, English, and/or Reading curriculum.

Fluently speaks, reads, and writes in language specified in posting.

Previous experience working with multilingual students and/or specialized training in reading instruction and English language arts may be substituted for BA/BS, but may not be substituted for the minimum educational requirements.

Experience facilitating social emotional learning and wellness for youth and trauma-informed practices desired.

Proficient computer skills to include using MS Office and Google suites of products. Experience with educational and/or language software preferred.

Valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to different school sites.

Must be flexible and do additional related jobs as assigned.

School Employee Benefit Board (SEBB) Eligibility determination: All eligibility determinations are based on rules in Chapters 182-30 and 182-31 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). If the position is anticipated to work a minimum of 630 hours in a school year, then that position would be deemed benefit eligible. SEBB benefits include medical, vision, dental, long-term disability and life insurance. Supplemental coverages are also available.

Retirement Eligibility determination: A certificated position participates in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) which requires at least 5 months of 70 or more hours of compensated employment during a school year to be eligible for Washington State Retirement. A classified position participates in the School Employee Retirement System (SERS) if the position is expected to require at least 5 months of 70 hours or more for two consecutive years (initially) of employment.
