The AAO is a professional association of educationally qualified orthodontic specialists dedicated to ethically advancing the art and science of orthodontics, improving the health of the public by promoting quality orthodontic care, and supporting the practice of orthodontics. The AAO is comprised of more than 19,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. The specialty of orthodontics is the oldest and largest dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association.

Position summary:

The Web Operations & Experience Lead plays an important, full-time role in supporting the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) web presence and related systems. This versatile professional will manage and enhance the organization's multiple WordPress sites, domains, and SSL certificates, while also driving user experience improvements, process automation, and frontend/backend web development. This role requires a dynamic individual with project management expertise, strong technical and creative skills, and a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Qualifications

essential functions:

Web & Technical Administration

Maintain and administer multiple WordPress websites, ensuring uptime, performance, and security.

Oversee domain registrations, DNS configurations, renewals, and SSL certificate management.

Coordinate code deployments, plugin updates, and vulnerability patches.

Manage version control workflows and repositories in GitHub.

Troubleshoot website and server issues; work with external vendors (e.g., Matchbox) as needed.

Development & Design

Design, develop, and maintain custom WordPress themes and templates.

Build and enhance interactive forms and workflows to support business processes.

Implement responsive, accessible UI using JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.

Integrate APIs with third-party services and platforms.

Project & Workflow Management

Own the intake, prioritization, and tracking of all web-related requests.

Collaborate cross-functionally with staff and vendors to scope, manage, and deliver projects.

Maintain and update Kanban-style task boards (e.g., Trello or equivalent).

Document procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting guides.

User Experience & Support

Manage user roles, permissions, and access for web systems.

Conduct user training, feedback sessions, and periodic testing to improve UX.

Proactively identify opportunities for website optimization and user engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with form builders and low-code/no-code automation tools.

Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards.

Understanding of SEO and analytics integration (e.g., Google Analytics, Tag Manager).

Working knowledge of Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and related business platforms.

Experience managing or coordinating with creative vendors.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Web Development, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).

5–7 years of relevant experience in web administration, development, and/or design.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency with:

WordPress (including custom theme and plugin development)

JavaScript, HTML, CSS

Git/GitHub version control

API integration and RESTful services

Web security best practices

Demonstrated experience with project or workflow management tools (e.g., Trello, Jira, Asana).

Strong analytical, communication, and customer service skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Sedentary inside office work with limited exposure to weather conditions. Occasional travel required, typically one trip annually of 5-8 days duration. Requires ability to lift, pack and unpack boxes of supplies. Also requires the ability to be on one’s feet for long periods (10-hour days) during an annual conference at a hotel or convention center facility.
