The Senior PSM Engineer is responsible for leading high-level process safety activities, including Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) studies, Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS), and functional safety assessments. This role is critical in ensuring the integrity and reliability of safety systems, as well as mitigating risks associated with hazardous processes in compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) standards and best practices.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field.
- Master's degree in a related discipline is preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in process safety engineering within the chemical, petrochemical, or oil and gas industry.
- Extensive experience with LOPA, SIF/SIL assessments, SRS development, and functional safety studies.
- Licensed certifications are a plus
Responsibilities:
LOPA Studies:
Lead and conduct Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of existing and proposed layers of protection for process safety.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine appropriate risk reduction measures based on LOPA findings. SIF/SIL Studies:
Perform Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments to determine the required safety performance of safety instrumented systems (SIS).
Validate that the SIL levels are appropriate to the risks identified and ensure that systems meet the necessary functional safety requirements. Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS):
Develop and maintain Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) for safety systems, ensuring they meet the defined process safety objectives and SIL requirements.
Ensure that the SRS is comprehensive, clear, and aligned with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Functional Safety Studies:
Lead functional safety assessments, including hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and other methodologies, to evaluate the safety and reliability of critical systems.
Ensure that functional safety studies are documented, reviewed, and incorporated into the overall process safety management strategy. Process Safety Strategy:
Contribute to the development and implementation of the plant's process safety management strategy, focusing on high-level risk mitigation and system reliability.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in process safety practices and propose solutions to enhance safety performance. Risk Management:
Evaluate and manage process safety risks associated with new and existing operations, ensuring that risk reduction measures are effectively implemented.
Work closely with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure that process safety risks are communicated and managed throughout the plant lifecycle. Documentation and Reporting:
Develop, review, and maintain technical documentation related to process safety studies, including LOPA, SIF/SIL, SRS, and functional safety assessments.
Ensure that all documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with regulatory and industry standards.
Prepare and submit detailed reports on process safety studies, including recommendations and action plans, to plant management and corporate PSM teams, where applicable.
Maintain a comprehensive record of all process safety activities and outcomes for audit purposes. Training and Development:
Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and plant personnel on process safety principles, methodologies, and best practices.
Develop and deliver specialized training sessions on LOPA, SIF/SIL, and other advanced process safety topics.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an industrial plant environment, including exposure to noise, heat, and various chemicals.
- Willingness to travel as required for corporate meetings, training, and site assessments.
