Java Technical Lead

Job Title: Technical Lead – Java Engineer (Hybrid in Columbus, OH)

Location: Columbus, OH – Hybrid (25% onsite)

Type: Contract-to-Hire (W-2 only)

Contract Rate: $70–80/hr

Conversion Salary: $160,000/year

Position Summary:

We’re hiring a Technical Lead – Java Engineer to help guide the development and evolution of cloud-based applications supporting healthcare data and integrations. This is a hybrid leadership role requiring deep technical expertise in Java, GCP, and Python, along with the ability to architect scalable solutions and lead an 8+ person engineering team.

This role is ideal for a senior engineer who still enjoys hands-on work (approx. 30% coding) but thrives in guiding team execution, shaping system design, and mentoring others.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide technical leadership for a growing team of 8+ engineers across backend services and cloud platforms

Contribute to architecture, design patterns, and development strategy for scalable, resilient cloud-native applications

Write and review code (30% of your time) primarily in Java and Python

Architect and implement data and event-driven solutions using GCP services (BigQuery, Composer, GKE, Cloud Functions)

Collaborate with product managers and delivery leaders to align technical execution with business goals

Ensure best practices in CI/CD, testing, and cloud security

Lead design reviews, conduct mentoring sessions, and drive technical excellence across the team

Participate in problem-solving, root cause analysis, and system performance improvement

Required Skills & Experience:

10+ years of professional experience in software development

Strong hands-on experience with Java (primary), Python, and cloud-based microservice architectures

Proven experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially:

GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine)

Cloud Functions

Composer (Airflow)

BigQuery

Experience in technical leadership, team mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration

Ability to balance strategic design with tactical coding tasks

Excellent communication and leadership skills in hybrid team settings

Bonus Experience:

Healthcare data systems or regulated environments

DevOps or SRE collaboration experience

Background in ETL or big data pipelines
