Job Description

Description:

We are looking for a hands-on Quality Manager who will be directly responsible for performing all aspects of quality in a manufacturing environment focused on highly engineered capital equipment. This role is not about overseeing a large team—it is about doing the work. The successful candidate will own the day-to-day execution of all quality activities, from inspections and audits to corrective actions and process improvements, while also ensuring compliance with ISO 9001 and ITAR regulations.

You will work side-by-side with production, engineering, and supply chain teams to drive quality at every stage of the process and will supervise one Quality Inspector. Requirements:

Key Responsibilities:

Quality Execution (Hands-On Focus):

Personally conduct incoming, in-process, and final inspections of mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies.

Create and maintain inspection procedures, checklists, and test protocols.

Perform hands-on quality verification using tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and CMMs.

Troubleshoot quality issues on the floor in real time and drive immediate containment and resolution.

Take direct ownership of root cause analysis and implementation of corrective/preventive actions.

Maintain and improve the ISO 9001 QMS documentation, procedures, and compliance.

Serve as the main contact for internal and external audits, preparing materials and participating directly in audit activities.

Ensure day-to-day ITAR compliance, including proper handling of technical data and manufacturing controls.

Lean Manufacturing & Process Improvement:

Actively participate in and help implement Lean initiatives such as 5S, visual management, process standardization, and waste elimination.

Support and help drive Kaizen events and continuous improvement projects.

Collect and analyze quality data to identify trends and implement process improvements.

Supplier and Customer Interaction:

Perform supplier quality reviews, including incoming inspections, defect tracking, and working with Purchasing on supplier corrective actions.

Respond to customer quality issues, including performing hands-on investigations and writing formal root cause and corrective action reports (RCCA).

Support and maintain compliance with customer-specific quality requirements.

Documentation and Calibration:

Manage and maintain calibration records for all inspection and test equipment.

Oversee documentation control, quality records, and traceability processes.

Oversight Responsibility:

Provide day-to-day directions and support to one Quality Inspector.

Train and coach production employees on inspection techniques, quality awareness, and standard procedures.

Collaborate cross-functionally—not from a distance, but in the trenches.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, or related technical field preferred (or equivalent experience).

Minimum 5–7 years of direct, hands-on quality experience in a manufacturing environment producing complex or capital equipment.

Practical experience with ISO 9001 QMS and ITAR compliance.

Strong background in Lean Manufacturing tools and practices.

Skilled in inspection and measurement techniques; comfortable using CMMs and hand inspection tools.

Knowledge of quality tools such as 8D, FMEA, Control Plans, SPC, and Root Cause Analysis.

Able to write and execute standard work, quality plans, and work instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Quality certifications (CQE, CQM, Six Sigma, or similar).

Familiarity with ERP and QMS systems.

Comfortable working in a low-volume, high-complexity environment.
