Under general supervision, assists in maintaining records and performing limited accounting activities utilizing initiative and judgment; performs general clerical work of average difficulty, requiring public and inter-departmental contacts; does related work as required.

Representative Duties
Posts, tabulates and proofreads statistical and financial data; verifies, balances and adjusts accounts; receives, sorts, stamps, notes, indexes and files bills, invoices, vouchers, applications, requisitions, purchase orders and other documents; makes and checks arithmetic calculations such as computing extensions and discounts, applying standard guides and procedures; segregates, posts, reconciles and balances accounts and time, mileage, material and equipment reports; assists in distributing checks; may operate typewriter, adding machines, phone, and other office equipment; maintains statistical records and special files; sends out a volume of business license renewal forms and follow-up letters; updates existing data in various spreadsheets; data entry such as entering invoices into financial system.
Organizational Responsibilities
Positions in this class are usually established in the Finance Office, report to a Senior Account Clerk or other supervisor, and are responsible for financial, statistical or specialized recordkeeping duties as assigned. This is an experienced level class but work is performed in line with established procedures and with regular supervisory checks and reviews available.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school supplemented by, or including, courses in bookkeeping, accounting, business administration, or related fields; AND three (3) years of office clerical experience, at least one year of which has been in the keeping and reviewing of bookkeeping, accounting and statistical records, or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the skill level required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Must have knowledge of Excel, basic arithmetic functions, data entry, recordkeeping and filing; of the methods, practices and terminology used in elementary bookkeeping, financial and statistical clerical work; of office machines such as calculators, adding machines and billing machines. Must have the ability to perform moderately difficult financial and statistical clerical work following a prescribed routine; to make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately; to verify names and numbers and to post and write legibly and accurately; to read, interpret and make minor decisions in accordance with established policies, regulations and ordinances; to learn key punching, the operation of standard bookkeeping and other office machines; to maintain good working relationships with others, and to follow written and oral directions.
Skills
General keyboard typing: 50 net words per minute
Statistical typing: 90 strokes per minute
10-key adding machine***Candidates must provide the City with a current typing certificate (acquired within the last 6 months) indicating a typing speed of at least 50 net words per minute (nwpm). Typing certification must be proctored either virtually or in person.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
This position requires the use of a computer keyboard, a variety of calculators, and requires sitting for prolonged periods of time, standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching and grasping, and in the course of work, may require lifting or moving standard-size office files and boxes.
