Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a FT, Grounds Maintenance Lead in the Facilities Operations Grounds Department. The standard work schedule is Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Adjustments to the schedule will be required to accommodate weather related concerns as they arise. This is a non-bargaining, non-exempt, grade 17 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under supervision and/or direction, incumbents of this position are responsible for leading and performing of grounds/building maintenance work and providing a clean and pleasant environment for the College community. This position is responsible to schedule, review and inspect finished work, as well as delegation of duties in the absence of the Grounds Supervisor. Primary responsibilities include inspections of equipment to ensure all is safe, in good working order, ready for use, and properly secured after each use. Work involves the maintenance of one or more buildings/areas and/or leading the work of Grounds Maintenance workers assigned to the building/area, in addition to performing all types of routine grounds maintenance work.

Contacts and interactions vary and may involve multiple constituencies such as colleagues, supervisors, managers, directors and/or line staff concerning the operation, maintenance and use of the College community as well interactions with students, vendors, and the public, providing information, service and assistance.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Provide guidance and instruction to assigned staff.

Receive and delegate work assignments as well as review/inspect the work of assigned staff.

Perform routine grounds maintenance work such as graffiti and trash removal (recycled and bulk items), which may include bio-hazardous material.

Maintain landscaped areas including but not limited to mowing, edging, seeding, and pruning, along with leaf and debris removal.

Clean parking lots and sidewalks.

Maintain and repair aquatic areas throughout the year.

Remove dead animals from campus grounds.

During inclement weather, remove snow and ice as mandated.

Keep storm water management areas maintained, clean and free of debris.

Perform maintenance and minor equipment repairs such as tune-ups, belt changes, tire repairs, tool sharpening, and adding or changing fluids, and other equipment maintenance as needed.

Operate vehicles and various types of tools and equipment.

Process work orders and assist other skilled trades.

Assist with special events such as the Annual Commencement.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED and any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the trade and the ability to perform the duties of the job.

Three years of hands-on experience in a lead position or as an assistant crew foreman for or front-line supervisor in commercial professional landscape or grounds maintenance, which included knowledge and application of operation and maintenance of lawn equipment, planting and maintenance of plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs.

Valid Class C Drivers License.

Experience operating snow removal equipment such as tractors and trucks with blades.

Knowledge and application of the methods, procedures, and techniques of grounds maintenance work, tools, equipment, and materials used, and hazard/safety precautions.

Knowledge of care and identification of plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Knowledge of small engine use and light maintenance repair required.

Knowledge of basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet, and College computer applications may be required.

Excellent leadership skills and the ability to instruct, train, and work cooperatively with others.

Ability to perform medium to heavy duty grounds maintenance work including the ability to lift, carry, push or pull items up to 50 lbs. without assistance and 50-100 lbs. with assistance.

Hiring Range: $20.84 - $26.05 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $31.27.
