Job Description
Responsible for providing professional security services at designated City of Key West properties including Key West Bight, Key West Bight Ferry Terminal, and City Marina at Garrison Bight. The Security Officer will patrol areas on foot and/or by golf cart, enforce rules and regulations, monitor tenant properties, enforce parking regulations, and document incidents as appropriate. This position requires excellent communication skills, professional conduct, and the ability to interact effectively with the public, marina tenants, and City personnel.
Pay: $25/hr
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Security Functions:
Patrol designated City properties on foot and/or by golf cart to detect and prevent illegal or injurious activities
Monitor all parts of the facilities, including marina docks and upland facilities
Identify individuals breaking City laws and codes; take appropriate non-confrontational action
Enforce property rules and regulations in a professional, courteous manner
Monitor tenant properties and belongings for security concerns
Enforce parking regulations according to facility policies
Greet and engage with patrons, boaters, and visitors in a courteous and helpful manner
Report suspicious activities, safety hazards, or maintenance issues to appropriate personnel
Documentation and Reporting:
Complete "Incident Reports" for any notable events, contacts with unauthorized parties, or situations requiring intervention
Maintain a Security Activity Report recording all instances of security interest
Maintain a detailed daily log of activities, observations, safety hazards, and equipment malfunctions
Document unregistered vessels at marina facilities
Reconcile "Dock Check List" at Marina facilities through slip-by-slip inspection
Use City's time clock system to check in/out for shifts
Report all significant issues immediately to supervisor and/or Key West Police Department when appropriate
Ferry Terminal Specific Duties (when assigned):
Manage passenger flow during arrivals and departures
Assist with crowd control during peak periods
Direct vehicle traffic for passenger pick-up/drop-off
Verify credentials as required
Assist with facility closing procedures
Provide passenger assistance as needed
Marina Specific Duties (when assigned):
Conduct regular dock checks throughout shift
Verify vessel registrations and proper docking
Monitor for unauthorized use of marina facilities
Conduct regular perimeter checks at minimum 2-hour intervals
Maintain security log with timestamps at checkpoint locations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
U.S. citizenship or valid resident alien status
Three (3) years of strong security experience
Valid State of Florida Class D Security License
Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) or ability to obtain
High school diploma or equivalent
Full fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding)
Successful completion of company training in patrol techniques, first aid including CPR, public relations, safety, and proper use of telephones, radio, and report forms
Clear criminal background check
Professional appearance and demeanor
Reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk, stand, and remain alert for extended periods (up to 12 hours)
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions including heat, rain, and humidity
Ability to patrol marina docks and facilities which may include uneven surfaces
Ability to operate basic security equipment including communications devices and flashlights
Vision correctable to 20/20 for observation duties
Adequate hearing for communication and safety awareness
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE:
Work is primarily performed outdoors at waterfront facilities
Shifts vary depending on assignment and facility needs
Weekend, evening, and holiday work required
Must be available for contingency staffing with minimal notice
May be required to work extended hours when ferry boats stay longer than scheduled
CONDUCT REQUIREMENTS:
Maintain professional appearance and demeanor at all times
Be courteous to visitors, tenants, and City personnel
Avoid personal activities that detract from professional image (e.g., personal calls, social media use)
Report for duty on time and remain until properly relieved
Notify supervisor immediately of any operational concerns or issues
Comply with all City policies and procedures
Represent the City and security company in a professional manner
CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Valid Florida Class D Security License
