SOUTHINGTON WATER DEPARTMENT

The Department seeks an Engineering Technician with a minimum of 5 years’ experience within the water utility field. A minimum of an associate’s degree with major course work in civil engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulics, computer technology, GIS knowledge, construction management or a related field is required and must possess a valid CT motor vehicle license. The Board of Water Commissioners reserves the right to allow for exception or equivalencies. Offers of employment will be subject to passing a pre-employment physical exam, including a urinalysis drug test. The position starts at $36.03 per hour.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the general supervision of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, the Engineering Technician is responsible for, but not limited to planning, mapping, water quality sample preparation, water quality compliance monitoring, Call Before You-Dig preparation, developer/contractor communications, sizing and pricing water mains and water services, preparing bids specifications, other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, a person must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

· Minimum (5) years of experience in the Water Works Profession or related field, level of Education will be considered and possibly substituted for experience.

· Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or equivalent with emphasis in environmental engineering, hydraulics surveying, computer technology and drafting.

· Ability to skillfully communicate orally and in writing.

· Ability to express ideas and convey information to others accurately.

· Ability to convey instructions and/or directions in a clear and concise manner.

· Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents.

· High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

· Ability to respond to questions or concerns from the public.

· Demonstrate a positive image for the Department in all responses to the public and outside agencies.

· Ability to be sensitive to the needs of customers. Ability to determine their exact concerns.

· Working knowledge of computers and engineering software.

· Possess a very high level of interpersonal skills, and have an established record of ability to work effectively with others.

· Demonstrate ability to respond effectively to questions or concerns regarding public water department operations.

· Demonstrate a high level of analytical ability to access and identify appropriate courses of action to complex problems.

· Possess a working knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to public water department operations and staff.

· Be responsible for the control of the flushing program with assistance from the Distribution Foreman

· Be physically able to perform the essential elements of the job, including, among other things, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing and performing other similar physical maneuvers for long periods of time or repetitively; able to lift up to 80 lbs. on a daily basis, operate equipment and tools effectively, operate Department vehicles, reading information on such things as charts, graphs, diagrams, blueprints, dials and/or meters, and detecting faint high frequency sounds;

· Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

· Must establish and maintain a bona-fide personal residence within fifteen- (15) mile radius of the Southington Water Department’s offices located at 605 West Queen Street, Southington, CT within six months from date of hire and continuing during employment thereafter.

· GIS capability and skills are desirable

Typical Job Responsibilities and Duties Include, Among Others:

Scheduling and advance preparation of materials, equipment and laboratory services for the timely completion of all Federal and State water quality testing requirements.

Review of all water quality tests to determine compliance with all State and Federal water quality limits. Submit all such water quality tests with the appropriate State or Federal agency in compliance with its filing deadlines. Maintains all such related file records.

Review all site plans for compliance with Water Department regulations and design requirements. Communicate with developers for changes, and corrections. File and retrieve all records and

correspondence related to plans and specifications.Company Description
