Description
The Mechanical Interactive Designer is a self-motivated individual who produces high-quality outcomes during the design, engineering, and production of Roto’s custom “hands on” interactive exhibits and interpretive displays. These duties require attention to detail, quality, and productivity as well as strong collaboration skills and client service instincts.
Under the direction of a Mechanical Production Manager and in collaboration with other team members, the Mechanical Interactive Designer successfully manages multiple individual exhibits through the entire engineering, production, and installation process and demonstrates the ability to manage complex exhibits through this process.
Essential Functions (including, but are not limited to):
Manage multiple exhibits through all stages of research, development, and production.
Work directly with Mechanical Production Manager to define the technical approach and production methodology for all assigned exhibits. Continue through full development and production, communicating routinely with the Mechanical Production Manager for input, feedback, and direction.
Understand critical milestones and recommend priorities to internal partners.
Collaborate directly with designers, developers, project managers, fabricators, and clients throughout all phases of a project.
Assist with managing the work of Mechanical Exhibit Builders during production of each exhibit through clear, precise documentation, direct communication, and regular review & feedback.
Maintain full documentation for all assigned exhibitions including parts list, technical/operating descriptions, 3d models, CADs, and troubleshooting procedures where necessary.
Prototype new exhibit systems, devices, and activities through R&D, mock-ups, and product bench tests.
Perform major exhibit installations, repairs, and upgrades, involving coordination with clients and subcontractors as required
Oversee and manage 3rd party vendors and contractors to accomplish tasks outside of personal expertise or for jobs beyond the capacity of the team assigned.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in mechanical assembly or design.
Must demonstrate a proven ability to deliver high quality and reliable final products through extensive testing and troubleshooting.
Must be self-motivated and productive; initiative to meet assigned deadlines.
Proficiency in SolidWorks or other parametric modeling software, such as Inventor, OnShape, or Fusion 360.
Must have the mechanical ability to integrate various electro-mechanical devices and apparatus into exhibit casework.
Must have good working knowledge and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and plumbing/pneumatic systems, as well as willingness and ability to learn additional technical skills.
Must be able to read, interpret, and create engineering, production, and shop drawings.
Must be able to read architectural drawings consisting of floor plans, detail construction drawings, and facility utility plans.
Must have a thorough knowledge and a high level of skill with hand tools, power tools, various saws, routers, and drills. Experience with machine tools like lathes and mills is a plus.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
