Under general supervision, the Associate Engineer will support Engineering Planning to enhance the distribution and transmission systems ensuring safe and reliable power delivery. The engineer will participate in short- and long-term load forecasting and contingency analysis to identify system needs. They will develop solutions such as new substations, transmission projects, distribution improvements, and Non-Wire Alternatives (NWAs), including solar PV, batteries, and targeted demand reduction.This role supports initiatives such as the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), Coordinated Grid Planning Process (CGPP), Distribution System Implementation Plan (DSIP), and Long Range Plan (LRP). The engineer will attend industry conferences, utility working groups, stakeholder meetings, and serve on technical committees as required. This position reports to the Section Manager of Planning and supports the work of Senior Engineers and Engineers within the Planning group.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
Conduct annual load forecasting, contingency studies, and NWA analysis to identify system needs.
Identify and justify capital projects for the ten-year electric delivery system plan, supporting Engineering and Electric Operations budgets.
Develop conceptual designs and documentation for T&D capital improvement projects, including white papers, cost/benefit analyses, and justifications.
Perform distribution system modeling and analysis, including voltage profiles, loss studies, contingency switching, circuit reconfigurations, and system administration as needed.
Provide operational support such as fuse coordination, motor start calculations, voltage regulation settings, transformer tap settings, and resolution of voltage issues.
Review interconnection studies, develop distribution interconnection estimates, attend DER meetings, and support DER planning.
Conduct steady-state power flow, voltage stability, and transfer analyses to ensure compliance with planning criteria and NERC/FERC standards.
Participate in transmission system planning studies and regional planning efforts with NYISO, PJM, NPCC, and RFC.
Prepare engineering procedure guides, reports, and presentations to document technical analysis.
Coordinate summer readiness efforts, including task tracking, weekly meetings, and daily calls during heat events.
Participate in annual reviews with the Distribution Control Center and Electric Operations to assess summer operating studies and contingency plans.
Stay current with industry trends via webinars, conferences, stakeholder meetings, and technical committees; support emergency management and storm response efforts as required. Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree in engineering and 2 years applicable engineering work experience. Preferred Education/Experience

Familiarity with electrical systems and electric overhead transmission and substation construction, required.
Proficient in the design of high voltage transmission systems and components, required.
Understands civil engineering and structural theory, construction and operation of a modern electric power system, required.
Is familiar with civil engineering and structural design of concrete, steel and wood structures and foundations, required.
Must be well organized, detail oriented and flexible to handle multiple assignments and deadlines, required.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have the ability to effectively interact with customers, support staff, and various levels of management, required.
Must have strong analytical, technical and interpersonal skills, required.
Must have demonstrated the ability to work on a team with other employees, required.
Computer literacy with proficiency in Windows environments is required Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Project, required.
