Description
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Production Weld Shop Supervisor to lead the day-to-day operations of our welding and fabrication area. This role will oversee plasma cutting, press brake and forming, round-up and roll forming processes. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with WPB and stainless-steel alloys, a strong foundation in various welding techniques including sub-arc welding, and a high level of quality and procedural discipline. The position requires a strong leader with technical knowledge, quality management expertise, and the ability to develop, implement, and manage weld testing and procedure documentation. Knowledge and application of Lean Manufacturing and 6S workplace principles is critical to success in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead daily operations of the weld shop including plasma cutting, press brake forming, roll forming, and welding processes.
Supervise and coordinate activities of welders, fabricators, and support staff to meet production schedules and quality standards.
Drive continuous improvement in productivity, safety, and quality metrics through Lean Manufacturing techniques.
Champion the implementation and sustainment of 6S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and Safety) across the weld shop.
Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and weld symbols to guide team in fabrication tasks.
Develop, write, and maintain weld procedures (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder qualifications (WPQ) in accordance with ASME/AWS standards.
Oversee and manage weld testing requirements, including destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) processes.
Ensure compliance with internal quality requirements and customer specifications for both carbon (WPB) and stainless alloys.
Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance teams to resolve process issues and improve performance.
Lead efforts in root cause analysis and corrective actions for weld-related nonconformances.
Maintain and enforce workplace safety policies and OSHA compliance in the weld shop.
Train and mentor welders and operators to improve technical skills and adherence to procedures.
Promote a culture of accountability, waste elimination, and visual management.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in a high-mix, low- to mid-volume production weld/fabrication environment.
Strong experience with WPB and stainless steel, including appropriate welding and fabrication techniques.
Hands-on experience with plasma cutting, press brake operation, forming, and sub-arc welding.
Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols.
Solid understanding of ASME, AWS, and other industry codes and standards.
Proven experience writing and managing welding procedures and testing documentation.
Demonstrated success in applying Lean Manufacturing principles and leading 6S initiatives.
Quality-focused mindset with experience leading inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Excellent communication skills for cross-functional coordination.
Welding certifications or technical training preferred.
Work Environment:
Manufacturing environment with regular exposure to heat, noise, dust, and fumes.
Required to wear PPE including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots.
Standing, lifting, and operating heavy equipment required as needed.
