The Axel Group is currently seeking a Project Engineer to join our client’s team in Jacksonville, FL. Our client is a reputable, privately-owned civil contracting firm with a strong footprint across the Southeast. They are recognized for delivering high-quality construction services across both public and private sectors, with core expertise in site development, clearing and grading, underground utilities, roadway construction, and water/wastewater treatment plant projects.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for professionals with experience in heavy civil construction—particularly those with a background or interest in site development and public works projects. This Project Engineer will play a key role in supporting complex infrastructure projects involving public works, water resources, and site development, while working alongside a knowledgeable and collaborative team.
Responsibilities:
Execute project tasks as directed by the Project Manager and/or Superintendent; maintain consistent and effective communication with both roles.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of all project-related contract documents, including plans, specifications, budgets, subcontracts, schedules, and purchase orders.
Support schedule development and maintenance; assist in updating project and short-term schedules to ensure alignment with overall project timelines.
Participate in project-related meetings such as pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, and coordination sessions as assigned.
Assist the Project Manager with budget updates, cost tracking, and cost-to-complete analysis.
Maintain a strong knowledge of company and OSHA safety standards; ensure jobsite compliance with all safety protocols.
Ensure timely and accurate project documentation, including billing, change orders, timesheets, production and daily reports, force account tracking, and safety/environmental reports.
Support quality control efforts by monitoring subcontractor work, verifying material compliance, and ensuring standards are upheld across all project phases.
Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized worksite; reinforce high standards of cleanliness and safety for crews and subcontractors.
Monitor and manage material inventory to reduce downtime, prevent overordering, and minimize waste, loss, or theft.
Assist in maintaining environmental compliance, including tasks related to NPDES reporting, erosion control, spill prevention, dewatering discharge, and hazardous material handling.
Provide administrative support with documentation such as RFIs, pay requests, permits, testing reports, submittals, shop drawings, and change orders.
Qualifications:
Have 1-3 years of experience in civil engineering or construction management (Site Development/Public Works/Utilities/DOT)
Have a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field)
Understand industrial constructions principles, operations, and logistics
Able to present leadership and management skills
Proficient computer and software skills: MS Excel, MS Project, and Primavera P6
Experience using construction specific software for heavy civil projects
Able to use manual dexterity, physical stamina, lift 80 pounds, and climb ladders or scaffolding
Analyze and forecast production budgets
