The Role

This internship will provide hands-on experience in materials testing, data collection, and laboratory procedures within an industrial setting, specifically related to abrasive blasting materials.

Learning Opportunities for Intern:

Gain practical experience in material characterization and quality control.

Develop skills in precise measurement and data collection.

Learn about bulk density as a critical material property in industrial applications.

Understand the importance of standardized testing procedures and repeatability/reproducibility.

Familiarize with laboratory safety practices and equipment operation.

Exposure to abrasive blasting materials and their properties.

Key Responsibilities:

Sample Management and Preparation:

Receive and properly label incoming abrasive material samples for testing.

Ensure samples are representative of the bulk material (e.g., "Tough Blast GX2").

Confirm that samples have notbeen sieved prior to testing, adhering strictly to the "DO NOT sieve" instruction.

Precision Mass Measurement:

Operate and maintain a precision balance.

Accurately tare the balance with the measuring beaker/cylinder.

Precisely weigh specific masses of samples (e.g., 2.500 kg) and perform re-measurements for verification, ensuring accuracy in accordance with the test plan.

Maintain a clean and organized weighing area.

Volume Measurement and Testing:

Accurately fill the measuring cylinder/graduated beaker with the weighed sample.

Execute the tapping procedure by lightly tapping the side of the beaker with a small rubber mallet to settle the abrasive particulates.

Carefully refill the beaker with surplus abrasive, level it with a straight edge, and scrape off any excess.

Repeat the tapping and air pressure application process until the abrasive can no longer be compacted further.

Weigh the beaker/cylinder after each compaction cycle until stable weight is achieved.

Ensure strict adherence to the sequential steps outlined in the "Volume Measurement" section of the test plan.

Data Recording and Analysis Support:

Accurately record all test data, including sample identification, initial mass, final mass, and final compacted volume (if directly measurable or calculable from mass/density relationships).

Assist in calculating bulk density in kg/m using the recorded data.

Organize and present data in a clear and consistent format for review.

Quality Assurance and Repeatability:

Conduct at least three repeat measurements for each sample to assess repeatability as per the test plan.

Document any observations or variations during the testing process.

Safety and Housekeeping:

Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and gloves at all times.

Handle materials and equipment with care.
