Job Title: Machine Operator I

Classification: Full-time, Hourly Non-Exempt

Reports To: Production Supervisor

Location: Kymera – CASL Houston, TX - Onsite

Job Overview:

The Machine Operator will work closely with the coatings team to prepare and finish components using a variety of grinding machines. This role involves interpreting technical documents, operating manual machines, and ensuring components meet customer and internal specifications. The ideal candidate will have experience with machining, grinding, and the use of precision measuring tools. A high level of attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment is essential.

Responsibilities:

Machining Operations: Under the guidance of a Machine Operator III, the Machine Operator I operate grinding machines to prepare and finish components to precise tolerances (up to 0.0005”).

Blueprint Interpretation: Becomes familiar with and learns to read and interpret charts, drawings, and blueprints to determine specifications and dimensions.

Precision Measuring: Through on the job training learns to use micrometers, calipers, and preset gauges to measure, examine, and test completed components to ensure they meet specifications.

Material Removal: Remove carbide, chrome, and steel using appropriate abrasives and techniques for rough and finish grinding.

Machine Monitoring: Under indirect supervision, become familiar with and learn to determine and monitor machine feed, speed, and abrasive selection for honing, and observe machines to identify potential malfunctions.

Quality Assurance: Inspect components during and after machining to ensure adherence to required tolerances and quality standards.

Lifting and Hoisting: Safely lift or hoist workpieces as needed.

Work Area Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Ability to learn how to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and charts.

Ability to learn how to properly use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.

Some experience with manual grinding, lathes, mills, and drill presses in a machining or repair environment preferred.

Ability to learn to determine machine feeds, speeds, and abrasive selection.

Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality components.

Good communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members.

Ability to adapt to change and maintain flexibility to changes in workload and responsibilities.

Safety awareness and commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.

Eligibility for employment in US.

Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, drug-screen, eye exam, hearing exam, and respirator test (health screenings required if applicable for job safety compliance purposes).

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience in a machine shop environment or as a machine operator is ideal, but some training will be provided.

Minimum of 1 year of experience in grinding and/or machining is preferred.

Previous experience in a fast-paced repair or manufacturing environment is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive manual tasks for extended periods.

Strength to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted.

Capability to perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.

Coordination and manual dexterity to safely operate machinery, tools, and equipment while maintaining focus on ergonomics and safety.

Ability to work safely in environments with potential exposure to dust, fumes, and noise.

Ability to wear and work comfortably in required personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to steel-toe boots, for prolonged periods.
