DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this classification is to manage the operations and staff involved in providing athletics programs and activities for Consolidated Government citizens.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work activities for athletics programs and facilities: prioritizes work activities to meet objectives; ensures subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex and problem situations and provide technical expertise; and provides progress and activity reports to Deputy Director.

Develops and implements long- and short-term goals and objectives for the Consolidated Government in the area of athletics programming: develops and implements policies and procedures for effective operations and maintenance; prioritizes and oversees athletics programming and activities; recommends changes in order to meet organizational needs; and identifies new processes and alternatives to resolve problems or improve/enhance operations.

Develops standards for athletics equipment, facilities, and fields maintenance: ensures equipment, facilities, and fields are properly maintained; conducts inspections of equipment, facilities, and fields; ensures safety and maintenance of all areas; and determines needed repairs and/or upgrades.

Plans, develops, oversees, and conducts athletic programming: plans and coordinates youth and adult programs, tournaments and special events; researches current programming trends and community needs; establishes programming and event fees; processes program and event registrations; collects fees; and maintains related documentation.

Develops and implements budget for assigned area: determines budget needs and allocations; monitors expenditures and revenues to ensure compliance with approved budget; and maintains related documentation.

Performs public relations duties: receives and responds to inquiries from the general public and others regarding various athletic programs and services; provides information or directs inquiries to appropriate department resources; meets with civic groups, sports organizations and others; and prepares and presents information regarding sports opportunities and athletics programming. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Parks & Recreation or related field

Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in athletics programming to include lead or supervisory experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of management and supervision, recreation administration, program development and implementation, and rules of variety of sports.

Familiarity of laws, ordinances, county and departmental policies and procedures, and budgetary processes and procedures, programs, activities, and facilities.

Proficiency in planning and coordinating large groups, supplies, and volunteers; athletic field preparation and maintenance, and public relations and use of the media.

Mastery of basic accounting and mathematics and operating modern office equipment.

Good communication skills, both oral and written

Demonstrated ability to work independently and to supervise others Licensing/Certification:

Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

Must obtain and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications within one (1) year of employment. PERFORMANCE APTITUDES:

Verbal: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Math: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving broader aspects of organizational programs and operations, moderately unstable situations, or the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.

Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, or rude/irate customers.

OTHER

This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation.

This position requires some travel from office to other locations.
