We are currently seeking an Electrical Test Engineer to join our client’s rapidly growing and innovative medical device company in Newport News, VA. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a dynamic firm focused on delivering cutting-edge solutions that enhance quality of life through medical technology.
About the Role:
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in PCB-level troubleshooting, defining and executing test plans, and working cross-functionally with design and manufacturing teams. You will play a critical role in ensuring the performance, safety, and compliance of electronic hardware through structured testing processes.
This role requires proficiency in Altium Designer for reviewing and modifying schematic/layout designs and a strong background in PCB test methodologies, documentation, and lab work.
Key Responsibilities:
PCB and System-Level Testing:
Develop and execute detailed test plans for PCB assemblies (PCBA) and electronic sub-systems.
Perform hands-on testing using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and other diagnostic equipment.
Define test criteria, pass/fail thresholds, and validate performance against design specifications.
Altium Designer Support:
Review and make minor modifications to schematic and layout designs using Altium Designer.
Support the generation of test-oriented output files including layout snapshots and fabrication documentation.
Test Fixture Design and Development:
Design or assist in developing simple test fixtures and custom setups for verification and validation.
Support automation of repetitive test tasks where feasible.
Production and Manufacturing Support:
Generate and maintain production-level documentation (test procedures, BOMs, test reports, etc.).
Collaborate with contract manufacturers and internal teams to ensure smooth production test workflows.
Cross-Functional Engineering Collaboration:
Work closely with electrical design engineers, quality, and manufacturing teams to resolve issues.
Participate in design and test reviews to provide input on reliability, testability, and manufacturability.
Qualifications:
Required:
Experience in PCB-level testing and debug techniques.
Proficiency in Altium Designer for schematic capture and layout review.
Strong knowledge of PCB fabrication and assembly processes.
Ability to read and generate technical documentation including test procedures and assembly instructions.
Familiarity with lab instruments and troubleshooting methods.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred:
Experience in regulated industries (medical device, aerospace, automotive).
Understanding of IPC standards for PCB layout and assembly.
Exposure to embedded systems or firmware testing is a plus.
Experience with design for test (DFT) and design for manufacturing (DFM) principles.
