The Ohio Attorney General’s Office is currently seeking an experienced Attorney for a Unit Coordinator position in our Charitable Law Section, Taxation Unit. The Taxation Unit represents the Tax Commissioner of Ohio in evidentiary hearings conducted by the Board of Tax Appeals, and in direct appeals taken from that tribunal to the Ohio Supreme Court and courts of appeal throughout Ohio. The successful candidate will have strong legal writing and trial advocacy skills and experience in appellate advocacy. The position will work a hybrid in-person/remote schedule. There may be changes to this schedule based on training and operational needs. The headquarter location is our Columbus, OH office at 30 East Broad Street.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Acts as an assistant attorney general and serves as an authorized agent of the Attorney General and client’s attorney and functions as a team leader for cases or clients in the field of expertise on sections most complex and challenging cases and/or client assignments (e.g., coordinates casework and staff attorneys; handles large caseload, unprecedented cases or more than one client in field of expertise, instructs and advises staff attorneys on particular law in their cases or on development of their practice in office);

- Appears before public tribunals (e.g., civil trials in state and/or federal courts or before administrative hearing boards or commission);

- Researches, analyzes and interprets complex issues of law, develops legal policy in field of expertise with client, writes technical, legal pleadings (e.g., briefs, affidavits, memoranda) and verbally presents legal opinions to technical or official personnel (e.g., drafts proposed statutes, negotiates settlements to problems, corresponds with interested parties, litigates difficult or unusual factual situations);

- Assumes additional duties to assist section beyond primary field of expertise;

- Applies law and policy to create technical, confidential and legal strategies as team leader with client and renders legal advice to client;

- Appears in public or private, formal or informal settings to discuss law and policy;

- Fulfills exclusive authorization of the Attorney General to practice law on behalf of state personnel (e.g., all agency heads, commissions, boards, departments and/or institutions);

- Works with federal, state, local officials and/or group representative to solve problems concerning state and will negotiate solutions on behalf of or with the client in technical situations requiring specific expertise;

- Drafts confidential legal documents (e.g., contracts, deeds, documents of indebtedness, settlements, financial agreements, opinions of law) and reviews documentation for illegalities, improprieties and/or any possible anticipated difficulties in legal processes;

- Enforces state laws and regulations;

- Other duties as assigned.

Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio pursuant to Section 4705.01 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Preferred qualifications:

At least 5 years of experience with State and Local tax law
