LEAD HARDWARE ENGINEER
ABOUT ASTRANU
AstraNu is a Seed-phase medical device startup that is bringing next-generation imaging
technology to market to transform middle-ear and hearing health. Powered by proprietary
breakthrough technology developed at Nokia Bell Labs, we are working to enhance,
accelerate, and streamline the diagnosis and treatment experience for patients and
physicians.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced Lead Hardware Engineer to spearhead electronics
development and become a foundational member of our passionate and collaborative team.
This role will be responsible for defining specifications, designing, and overseeing testing of
all electronic subsystems, ensuring our device meets the highest standards of performance,
reliability, and regulatory compliance. You will also serve as the primary technical interface
with external contractors, guiding their work and ensuring seamless integration of their
designs. This is an exceptional opportunity for a hands-on technical leader who thrives in a
dynamic startup environment and is passionate about making a tangible impact on medical
technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES
End-to-end ownership of electronic hardware system design, bring-up, testing, integration, documentation, and transfer to manufacturing
Define and document comprehensive electronics requirements, specifications, and architecture, considering real-time processing, high-speed data acquisition, image sensor integration, and user interface needs
Own the EE portion of the Design History File (DHF) and Design Review (DR) processes: write and update electrical design inputs/outputs, maintain traceability from system requirements through schematic/PCB release, lead formal design reviews, and ensure Design Verifi cation/Validation artifacts are captured in the DHF
Lead and participate in the design, simulation, and prototyping of complex analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, specifically tailored for 3D optical medical imaging applications
Oversee and contribute to PCB design, layout, and component selection, ensuring signal integrity, power efficiency, and manufacturability for a miniaturized medical device
Oversee the design, specification, and deployment of automated test-station hardware for production validation
Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between internal teams and external partners
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
5+ years of industry experience designing hardware end-to-end in a highly regulated industry (medical/aerospace/defense/etc)
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
Hands-on experience developing and maintaining requirements traceability matrices (RTMs) to link system, software, and hardware requirements; creating and updating risk management files (FMEAs); and managing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) to control BOM revisions and PCB updates
Demonstrated experience leading hardware development projects from concept to production, ideally in a startup or fast-paced environment
Proficiency in SPICE-based circuit simulation (e.g., LTSpice or PSpice); expert-level for schematic capture and PCB layout (e.g. Altium Designer or Cadence Allegro); Python for automating test procedures and data logging
Hands-on experience with hardware debugging, test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.), and test automation
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills
Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage external relationships and work across interdisciplinary teams (mechanical, optical, software, quality, regulatory)
Proactive, self-motivated, and able to thrive in a dynamic, evolving startup culture
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
Experience designing and testing medical device electrical equipment per IEC 60601 and ISO 13485
Experience navigating IEC 60601 risk management processes (per ISO 14971) and supported CE/FDA submissions, including preparing technical les for regulatory audits
Experience with CAD (SolidWorks, Autodesk, etc)
Experience with embedded C for microcontroller/ rmware integration on ARM- or PIC-based platforms
Knowledge of signal processing and image processing techniques relevant to biomedical imaging
