Controller – Full-Time

Location: Portland, Maine

Salary: $90,000.00 - $100,000.00 depending on experience

At Shalom House Inc., financial stewardship is at the heart of our mission. We’re a nonprofit committed to providing safe, supportive housing and life-changing services to adults living with mental illness. We’re looking for a Controller to oversee the financial operations that make our mission possible.

As Controller, you'll do more than balance ledgers—you’ll help build the foundation of trust, compliance, and transparency that allows our programs to thrive. From managing payroll to preparing for audits, your leadership will ensure our organization remains strong, responsive, and ready to serve.

What You’ll Be Doing

Leading the daily operations of our finance department

Managing payroll and benefit accounting with precision

Ensuring timely and accurate general ledger reconciliation and financial reporting

Supervising and supporting our accounting staff

Preparing for and overseeing external audits

Partnering on budgeting, cost reporting, and financial planning

Maintaining compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial best practices

What You Bring

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)

3–5 years of general accounting experience

At least 2 years of supervisory or management experience in a finance setting

Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred

Proficiency in Excel (including pivot tables) and accounting software (MIP experience a plus)

Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills

A proactive approach and desire to “own” your work

Passion for contributing to a meaningful mission

What We Offer Salary: Salary starting between $90,000 - $100,000, depending on experience.

What We Offer Schedule Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (or as agreed upon with supervisor)

Location: Portland, ME 04102 (Must be able to reliably commute or relocate)
