Reports to: Revenue Cycle Director & Emergency Department/ Med Surg Director, as appropriate

FLSA Classification: PRN, Non-exempt, Hourly $18.00- $22.00

This position is responsible for assisting with the secretarial duties, tasks and flow in the Emergency Department as well as accurately registering emergency department patients, verifying insurance eligibility and benefits, obtaining inpatient notifications, collecting deductibles and out of pocket amounts. May cross-train for further functions in the PFS department.

Essential Functions:

Report dailey census and bed availability.

Register Emergency Department patients in accordance with EMTALA rules. Obtain and record accurate demographic and insurance information. Scan insurance and driver's license into patient charts. Obtain signatures on all appropriate paperwork. Provide the patient with and ID bed. May perform bedside registration as needed.

Obtain inpatient notification and pre-authorization for all types of admits. Fax clinical information as directed.

Work with the Case Manager to ensure authorizations are complete and all clinical information is provided to insurance companies.

Verify Patient insurance eligibility and benefit information via software vendors or calling companies. Explain, in detail, insurance benefits, deductibles, and coinsurance to patients at time of service. Follow up with patients, families, employers, and insurance companies to resolve insurance eligibility problems.

Provide estimates of procedures or services to patients before or at time of service.

Discuss third party coverage with patients. Arrange for collection of patient out-of-pocket amounts ( deductibles, copays,coinsurance, etc.) prior to them leaving the Emergency Department. Discuss payment options and billing process with patients.

Provide patients with the Financial Assistance Application, if necessary. Maintain log of patients to whom applications have been provided. Refer patients to the Financial Counselor for assistance, as needed.

Provide Medicare Notices to observation patients-IMM/Moon

Ensure Pre-Admission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR) forms are obtained for Skilled Nursing Admissions. Ensure that patient criteria has been met for admission.

Accurately enters ER and Observation facility charges into system and marked as reviewed.

Ascertain the correct demographics and insurance information for all ED and inpatient admissions and identify any incomplete registrations, and complete them.

Coordinate consults for providers. Print utilization guidelines for providers when diagnosis is determined as requested.

Maintain ED petty cash fund. Deliver collected monies to Patient Financial Services daily.

Assist with trauma activation as necessary.

Complete and maintain patient transfer packets.

Coordinate transportation flights and EMS for patient transfers.

Schedule follow up appointments for patient discharge.

Assist with data collection for the Trauma Coordinator.

Register and assist in coordinating employee COVID testing.

Participate in in-services, educational opportunities, and staff meetings, as required.

Notify appropriate personnel if codes need to be reviewed, corrected, or added to the chargemaster.

Other duties as assigned. Education and Experience:

Highschool Diploma or equivalent required.

BLS required within 6 months of transfer or hire.

CPL required within 6 months of transfer or hire.

Knowledge of medical billing practices,including ICD-10,CPT, and HCPCS codes preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Revenue cycle education courses and /or Medicare learning modules as identified.

Certification as a Revenue Cycle Specialist through the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM) desired within 2 years of transfer or hire. Skills and Expectations:
