Lathe CNC Programmer Responsibilities
The Lathe CNC Programmer is responsible for programming operations and related activities, including support of employees, machines, and resources. This individual is a lathe programming subject matter expert and collaborates with department staff while demonstrating the following:
Possesses and maintains a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to work with others, including reporting to the shop foreman and GM.
Exemplifies and enforces shop policies to ensure compliance within the department.
Mentors other employees to foster a learning/sharing environment while maintaining best shop practices and adherence to company policies within a team of 10 machinists.
Provides availability to answer questions and solve problems.
Regularly offers constructive feedback and encouragement, conducts annual reviews for each employee, and recommends or issues disciplinary actions when needed.
Writes programs using CAM software based on specifications from the Engineering Department. Programs new jobs using Mastercam.
Programs, sets up, and operates Mazak and Okuma lathes:
Selects, aligns, secures, and removes fixtures, tools, attachments, and materials based on setup sheets (which the Programmer may write or support authoring of).
Recognizes, deploys, and uses proper inserts, fixtures, and tooling; uses gauges and precision measuring instruments to meet tolerance requirements; performs drilling, boring, tapping, broaching, threading, and grinding.
Performs first article inspections using recognized QA practices. Reports any issues to the shop foreman and maintenance personnel where machine performance may be concerned.
Continuously works to optimize machine and personnel performance to reduce downtime and inefficiencies.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of machine and tooling technologies.
Coordinates daily with the shop foreman and GM.
Works with Procurement to manage supplies and logistics, and tracks material and inventory, including replacement tools, parts, and equipment.
Designs jigs, fixtures, multi-part holdings, and templates to increase production efficiency.
Learns and improves upon established practices and instructions to enhance departmental efficiency and productivity.
Lathe CNC Programmer Qualifications
5 years of experience as a Lead CNC Programmer, including machining and using Mastercam, with 2+ years in a leadership role preferred.
Familiarity with Mazak and Okuma lathes is a plus!
Formal machining training or completion of coursework from an accredited trade school is preferred.
Strong skills in programming, problem-solving, analytics, mathematics, mechanical systems, planning, organization, interpersonal communication, and leadership.
Mechanically inclined with knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and basic trigonometry.
Ability to lift 50 lbs safely, maneuver materials using a pallet jack, and operate grinders.
Punctual and able to commit to a 40-hour work week, with occasional overtime available.
