Overview

This is a senior leadership role: Commercial & Risk Director, Energy & Resources. The position can be based in any Energy & Resources office location in North America and may require in-office presence and travel across North America. The role partners with operations, pursuit, and project teams to guide business and legal decisions across pursuits, contracts, negotiations, and project delivery, with a focus on minimizing financial risk.

Responsibilities

Lead the implementation of the Corporate Project Risk Practice within the Business Operating Unit (BOU) for North America, including supervising Senior Risk Manager and Risk Manager.

Provide strategic guidance during high-risk pursuits to align commercial and financial goals with optimal contract terms, scope, schedule, pricing, and budgets.

Oversee, guide, and participate in negotiations with clients, teaming partners, and subconsultants on terms, scoping, pricing, and change orders for elevated risk pursuits and projects.

Offer guidance to enhance performance on high-risk projects through change management, documenting changes, pursuing amendments, and maintaining client communication; provide direction for complex/high-risk projects to safeguard Stantec’s interests.

Mentor and develop project pursuit teams and project teams to improve commercial, contracting, and negotiating capabilities.

Collaborate with Senior Project Management Commercial Leaders to promote best practices for elevated risk projects and traditional pursuits, including tools, processes, and policies.

Develop and mentor staff and succession candidates; build high-trust relationships with business leadership, project managers, pursuit leads, and service teams.

Cultivate a results-driven, accountable environment and uphold a culture of ethics, integrity, and strong customer service.

Provide ongoing support to diagnose and resolve operational issues and identify continual improvement opportunities in collaboration with BOU Leaders.

Promote a positive Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) culture and ensure HSSE compliance, leading by example.

Capabilities and Credentials

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of twenty years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong commercial acumen; experience in contract law, risk management, and the A-E industry strongly preferred.

Strong commercial awareness and negotiating skills, including pricing strategies and contractual and non-contractual risk mitigations.

Understanding of enterprise risks and ability to assess which risks can be mitigated vs. avoided.

Extensive knowledge of items impacting projects or Stantec (schedules, regulatory landscape, technical risks, contractual terms, client behaviors).

Strong contractual knowledge and understanding of multiple delivery models (design-build, APD, EPC, P3).

High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and effective communication; ability to work collaboratively and transition to leadership as needed.

Strong client liaison skills.

Pay and Location

Pay Range: Locations in Lower Mainland - BC (Min Salary $198,400; Max Salary $307,600)
