Job Summary

Perform skilled service and inspection and maintenance duties, including greasing, lubricating, fueling, tire repair, and daily servicing of City vehicles, Park equipment, automotive equipment, trucks, and/or heavy construction equipment. Perform semiskilled mechanical duties, including the general repair, maintenance, and safety inspection of gasoline, diesel, automotive, and heavy equipment used by City departments.

Job Responsibilities

1. Perform routine preventive maintenance, DOT safety inspections, and repairs on City vehicles, including Police vehicles and equipment, including repair and replacement of brooms, skids, cutting edges, brakes, drive chains, conveyors, lights, batteries, safety equipment, filters, oil, hydraulic leaks, hydraulic hoses, etc. Perform the changing or repair of tires on all types of City vehicles, including automobiles, light-duty equipment, light-/medium-/heavy-duty trucks, and light-/medium-/heavy-duty construction equipment.

2. Perform scheduled and unscheduled repairs, inspections, and tune-ups on both automotive and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, rollers, sweepers, snowblowers, loaders, blades, bulldozers, scrapers, seeders, mowers, and other light and heavy construction equipment. This may include adjusting, repairing, and/or replacing hydraulics, fuel systems, brakes, drivetrains, transmissions, cooling and heating systems, body and chassis, steering systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, conveyors, wheels, axles and tires, suspension systems, computer and sensor systems, etc.

3. Inspect, maintain, and repair nonlicensed Park equipment, including mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, seeders, loaders, plows, trailers, and other specialized equipment as assigned.

4. Stock and dispense inventory used for equipment and service and maintain records of inventory used.

5. Assist in the development and coordination of department equipment service schedules.

6. Assist in the training and direction of permanent or temporary employees.

7. Design, weld, adapt, fabricate, and rebuild specialized equipment and tools; modify and redesign existing equipment; and repair and maintain stationary mechanical equipment.

8. Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, hauling snow, shoveling sidewalks, or assisting mechanics in the maintenance of snow removal equipment.

9. Deliver fluids and fuels to work sites. Perform various maintenance duties associated with the City of Sioux Falls' fueling site locations.

10. Perform custodial and building maintenance duties in the garage.

11. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary for the proper performance of this position.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED certification and one (1) year of vocational automotive/diesel trade school with six (6) months' experience repairing and servicing vehicles, automotive, and/or heavy construction equipment; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire a valid Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge in the safe operation of both light and heavy automotive and construction equipment.

Knowledge of mechanical parts and operation of self-propelled and hand-powered lawn mowers.

Knowledge of the essential principles of gasoline and diesel combustion engines, electronics, hydraulics, pressure systems, and cooling systems, including knowledge of the materials, methods, and standard practices used in analyzing and repairing automotive and heavy equipment.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required when working around and with heavy-duty chemicals, engine exhaust, power tools, welders, and machinery, plus automotive and heavy equipment.

Working knowledge of automotive equipment repair and of the principles of internal combustion engines.

Knowledge of the practices and methods of electric and acetylene welding.

Knowledge and skill in sharpening and repairing mower blades.

Knowledge of out-of-service criteria under North American Standard DOT.

Skill in the use of jacks, wrenches, grease guns, cleaning materials, and other tools and equipment used in servicing vehicles and automotive and heavy equipment.

Ability to effectively understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to read and understand schematics, hydraulic flow charts, and other light and heavy equipment repair manuals.

Ability to use a keyboard and perform simple computer functions.

Ability to write legibly.
