About the Role:

The Specimen Processor at South Central Hospital plays a critical role in ensuring the accurate and timely handling of biological specimens for diagnostic testing. This position is responsible for receiving, labeling, sorting, and preparing specimens according to established protocols to maintain sample integrity and prevent contamination. The Specimen Processor collaborates closely with laboratory technologists and healthcare professionals to support efficient laboratory operations and contribute to patient care outcomes. Attention to detail and adherence to safety and quality standards are paramount to this role, as errors can directly impact diagnostic accuracy. Ultimately, the Specimen Processor helps facilitate the smooth workflow of the laboratory, enabling precise and reliable test results that inform clinical decisions.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Previous experience in a clinical laboratory or specimen processing environment is preferred but not mandatory.

Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and specimen handling procedures.

Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Laboratory Assistant.

Experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting.

Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).

Training in infection control and biohazard safety.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities:

Receive and verify incoming specimens, ensuring proper identification and documentation.

Label and sort specimens according to type, priority, and testing requirements.

Prepare specimens for analysis by aliquoting, centrifuging, or other necessary processing steps.

Maintain accurate records of specimen handling and processing activities in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.

Ensure all work areas and equipment are clean, sanitized, and properly maintained to uphold safety and quality protocols.

Communicate effectively with laboratory staff and healthcare providers regarding specimen status and any discrepancies.

Adhere strictly to infection control and biohazard safety procedures to protect self and others.

Assist in inventory management of supplies related to specimen processing.

Skills:

The Specimen Processor utilizes strong organizational and communication skills daily to manage specimen flow efficiently and coordinate with laboratory personnel. Attention to detail is essential to accurately label and prepare specimens, preventing errors that could compromise test results. Knowledge of safety protocols and infection control is applied consistently to maintain a safe working environment and protect patient samples.
