Senior Data Analyst

The Senior Data Analyst manages the preparation and transformation of complex datasets, developing advanced predictive models, and delivering actionable insights that enhance organizational business decision making and enable real-time responses to emerging challenges. Reporting to the Manager, Analytics, the Senior Data Analyst plays a pivotal role in advancing Durham Region Transit's (DRT) analytics capabilities, driving initiatives that transform data into strategic assets to support decision-making, optimize operations, and achieve long-term organizational goals. This role is responsible for leading the end-to-end management of complex, multi-stakeholder analytics projects and delivering innovative, scalable data solutions aligned with DRT's strategic objectives.

The incumbent will:

- Manage the transformation and integration of complex data from diverse internal and external sources to produce unified, high-quality datasets that serve as foundational assets for data-driven decision making and organizational growth

- Optimize and enhance data pipelines by automating workflows, integrating advanced scripting, and collaborating with CSIT to ensure scalability and alignment with organizational strategies

- Lead the collaborative development of machine learning and artificial intelligence models by selecting appropriate algorithms, preparing large and complex datasets, and fine-tuning parameters to uncover patterns and predict outcomes that address critical organizational challenges

- Deliver strategic dashboards and real-time visualizations to enable clear, data-driven decisions by designing tools tailored to organizational priorities and stakeholder needs

- Act as the primary lead on high-impact, multi-stakeholder analytics projects, coordinating across departments to align priorities, define requirements, and deliver solutions that address complex organizational challenges

- Champion the elevation of data governance, data literacy and general data practices across DRT and actively advocate for the continuous improvement and evolution of DRT-s Data Analytics program

- Provide technical direction and leadership within projects, ensuring solutions are innovative, scalable, and sustainable while addressing immediate needs and long-term organizational growth

- Contributing advanced technical expertise to the development of business cases, recommendations, and actionable plans for adopting tools, systems, and strategies, ensuring proposed solutions address current project requirements while supporting DRT's long-term goals

- Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable health and safety legislation and all corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety

- Provide indirect supervision and supportive guidance to three data analysts

The successful applicant must possess:

- Four-year university degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related discipline is required. A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline will be considered an asset but is not required.

- Minimum five (5) years of experience in quantitative and qualitative research, applied data and statistical analysis, performance measurement, predictive and exploratory modelling, data mining, transformation, management and visualization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Advanced experience with relational databases, data warehousing, and ETL processes

- Experience with utilizing data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) and programming languages for data science

- Knowledge of research, surveying, data analysis and visualization, statistical methodologies and predictive modelling techniques

- Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Computing) and big data technologies

- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines in a rapidly changing environment

- Experience in, and an ability to learn new, office productivity, presentation and Business Intelligence software/platforms, including web analytics software (eg. MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Prezi, Power BI, Tableau, Google Data Studio/Analytics etc.)

- Ability to contribute to a team environment and foster excellent working relationships with all levels of staff and management within the organization

- Advanced written and verbal communication and presentation skills coupled with the ability to problem solve effectively

Understanding of transit operations or prior working experience in public transit would be considered an asset.

Certification in Data Analytics, Data Science, Business Intelligence, Cloud Technologies, Data Engineering or equivalent, or certification in project management would be considered an asset.

Management & Exempt Salary Grade 5

- Salary: $96,282 to $120,353 per annum
