The Roll Operator/Grinder is responsible for safety, quality, and productivity of the grinding machines. In addition, setting up and tending grinding machines in order to grind external or internal cylindrical or tapered surfaces of metal pieces. This role is also responsible for taking blocks apart and putting them together for work rolls and backup rolls. Follows instructions and charts during grinding procedure. This position is also responsible for timely order processing, correctly tagging and moving it to the next designation as required. Operating various grinding machines to knowledge of metal properties and abrasives. Organize, plan, and prioritize work. Ability to read work orders and production schedules to determine specifications.
Responsibilities
Grind external cylindrical tapered surfaces.
Take apart and put blocks together for work rolls and backup rolls
Remove metal by the application of abrasives which are bonded to form a rotating wheel.
Rough and finish flat, cylindrical surfaces.
Read and interpret charts, drawings.
Determine grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures and grinding wheels to be used.
Mount grinding wheel.
Dress wheel according to specifications.
Use dressing devices.
Position work rest to specified height.
Lift or hoist workpieces.
Confirm ground workpiece has the correct specifications.
Change worn grinding wheels.
Check grinding wheels for cracks.
Utilize micrometers, calipers and preset gauges.
Set up automatic work-feeding device.
Use proper wheel guards on all grinding machines.
Grind nonmetallic materials.
Observe machine during operation.
Drive forklift
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Strong commitment to safety and teamwork
Ability to lift, push, or pull heavy materials safely
Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment
Forklift or crane experience preferred
Shift Details:
This is a 2nd shift position (2:30pm-10:30pm). Training starts on 1st shift (6:30am-2:30pm).
Fixed 8-hour shifts with paid lunch
No rotating shifts
Weekend overtime when required
Compensation and Benefits:
$1.50 per hour shift premium for 2nd and 3rd shift
$1,500 sign-on bonus
Quarterly profit-sharing opportunity (average $6,000 to $10,000 per year)
Attendance bonuses up to $1,250 annually
Overtime paid at time and a half; double time after 48 hours per week
$180 annual safety boot allowance
