About the Role We are seeking an experienced Surgical Coding Specialist to join our coding team.
This role focuses on multi-specialty surgical cases across both inpatient and outpatient settings, including Same Day Surgery, trauma, orthopedics, cardiology, neurosurgery, GI, and general surgery.
You’ll ensure accuracy, compliance, and revenue optimization while collaborating with providers, auditors, and revenue cycle teams.
This position is ideal for coders who want to expand their expertise in complex surgical procedures and grow their careers in auditing, education, or leadership.
Key Responsibilities Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes for a wide range of surgical procedures.
Perform DRG/APR-DRG assignment for inpatient surgical cases, ensuring compliance with payer, CMS, and facility guidelines.
Review operative notes and clinical documentation for coding accuracy, identifying gaps and querying providers as needed.
Ensure correct sequencing, modifiers, and compliance with audit standards.
Conduct quality reviews and audits, providing feedback to improve coding practices and documentation integrity.
Collaborate with CDI, physicians, and revenue cycle teams to support coding accuracy and claim resolution.
Meet or exceed productivity and accuracy benchmarks.
Stay updated with coding regulations, guidelines, and payer requirements.
Qualifications Certification(s): CCS, CPC, COC, CIC, RHIA, COSC, or other AAPC/AHIMA-recognized credentials.
Experience: 5+ years of coding experience with a focus on surgical specialties.
Strong background in surgical coding across specialties such as Orthopedics, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Trauma, Transplants, GI, ENT, and General Surgery.
Proficiency with Epic or similar EMR/coding platforms.
Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and surgical procedures.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Background: Coding experience in Level 1 trauma centers, teaching hospitals, or large academic facilities.
Prior work in auditing, QA, CDI collaboration, or provider education.
Dual expertise in both facility and professional fee (pro-fee) surgical coding.
