2-month contract position with a local authority

Summary

This is a 2-month contract position with a local authority, aimed at leading and managing the legal services function within a housing association. The role is crucial for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, timely, and cost-effective legal advice and support across the organization. It focuses on housing law, tenancy management, property litigation, and regulatory compliance, providing essential support to operational teams and senior leadership in legal matters.

Responsibilities

Provide expert legal advice on housing law, tenancy agreements, leasehold issues, property disputes, and regulatory compliance.

Manage and oversee legal cases, including possession proceedings, anti-social behavior, disrepair claims, and leasehold disputes.

Liaise with external legal counsel and represent the organization in court proceedings and tribunals where necessary.

Ensure legal risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated across all departments.

Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents, contracts, and service-level agreements.

Support governance and regulatory compliance, including data protection and safeguarding obligations.

Lead and develop the legal services team, ensuring continuous improvement and professional development.

Essential Experience Required

Significant experience in housing law and property litigation, ideally within a housing association or local authority setting.

Proven track record of managing legal cases from inception to resolution.

Experience in advising on tenancy enforcement, leasehold management, and regulatory compliance.

Strong understanding of the legal framework governing social housing and landlord-tenant relationships.

Experience in managing or supervising legal professionals or support staff.

Essential Qualification Required

Qualified solicitor or legal executive (CILEx) with a valid practising certificate (or equivalent legal qualification).

Excellent knowledge of housing law, civil litigation procedures, and relevant legislation.

Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.

Ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
