UPPER ARLINGTON CITY SCHOOLS Location: Windermere Elementary School Position: Substitute Long-Term Reading Specialist (11/11/2025 - 12/19/2025) Licensure: Substitute Teaching License Reports to: Elementary School Principal(s) Employment Status: Substitute (11/11/2025 - 12/19/2025) Salary: 1-10 days $150/day; 11-20 days $165/day; 21-60 days $190/day; >60 days BA Step 0 (*Rate in same position); Employee of ESCCO Description: Fulfill literacy and reading specialty function for the district NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college * Reading endorsement * Master's degree in reading * Appropriate State of Ohio Licensure * Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Ability to work effectively with others * Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing * Effective, active listening skills * Organizational and problem solving skills * Ability to diagnose reading problems and prescribe appropriate interventions * Strong background in children's literature * Strong background in reading knowledge and scientific based reading instruction * Computer/word processing and PowerPoint skills * Grant writing knowledge Essential Functions: * Ensure safety of students * Conduct professional development activities in reading * Schedule professional development activities with outside presenters * Model effective teaching strategies in classrooms * Provide appropriate intervention for qualifying students * Review and select effective software used in reading labs and classrooms * Administer individual reading inventories and generate written reports based upon assessment results * Attend parent/teacher conferences * Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of reports, letters, and conferences * Evaluate software/reading programs and make recommendations for use or adoption * Evaluate and make recommendations for reading instruction * Assist colleagues in benchmark assessments * Collaborate and meet with respective grade level teachers regarding issues in reading * Purchase books for use in guided reading library and classroom libraries * Coordinate supplemental grants in reading * Maintain accurate records and collect data on student performances in reading * Maintain relevant reports and submit to appropriate constituents * Observe ethics of the teaching profession * Maintain respect at all times for confidential information * Promote good public relations * Prepare lesson plans aligned with the State Standards for Language Arts * Establish and maintain professional relationships * Facilitate study groups * Model and foster the love of reading with students and colleagues * Serve on committees pertaining to literacy * Provide reading instruction that is proven effective by scientific reading research.

Other Duties and Responsibilities: * Serve as a role model for students and colleagues * Interact with Superintendent and/or Board of Education and present information as requested * Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc.

to keep current on relevant issues * Maintain membership in the International Reading Association * Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life * Perform additional duties as assigned Equipment Operated: * Computer * Copy machine * Printer * Telephone * TV/DVD player * Calculator * Other equipment as needed Additional Working Conditions: * Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue * Occasional interaction among unruly children * Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipment * Frequently move and position self as necessary to access and operate equipment * Frequently move around workspace and travel throughout school building and/or school district Employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance use in the workplace throughout his/her employment with the district.
