How to Make the Team
The Bridgeport Islanders are seeking a knowledgeable and highly skilled Assistant Athletic Trainer to join our medical team. Essential duties include, but are not limited to, daily therapy of the athletes, assisting in return to play of injured players, ordering of supplies, assisting in physical performance testing, home game coverage, and keeping the training facility clean and functional. Collaboration with the medical staff and strength coach is vital to player health and performance. This position reports to the Head Athletic Trainer and will support integrated care to athletes, focusing on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and overall player wellness. The position is integral to the success of the team both during the season and while monitoring athlete health and injury recovery throughout the off season.
Show Us You Can
Collaborate daily with the Head Athletic Trainer to monitor and support players’ health, recovery, and readiness
Coordinate care for non-traveling players while the team is on the road
Participate in developing and implementing rehabilitation protocols in alignment with the strength coach and team's performance goals
Contribute to on-going player assessments and performance testing
Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked athletic training environment, ensuring readiness for treatment, practice, and emergencies
Ability to create and communicate emergency action plans
Assist in providing immediate emergency response during practices and games under the direction of the head athletic trainer or team doctor
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer to support player health and team operations
Your Training & Talent
Professional Qualifications
Degree from an accredited college or university with a focus in Athletic Training
Certification and Continuing education credits in athletic training nationally and within the state of Connecticut (NATA)
CPR certification in Sports First Responders
Has further studied the science of performance therapy and return to play scheduling
1-3 years experience working in a sports environment training high level athletes (i.e. Professional, NCAA, Olympic) is preferred
Work Proficiencies
Computer skills to utilize Athlete Health Monitoring Systems (ARMS)
Experience and knowledge with VALD equipment
Analytical mindset with on/off ice correlation
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
Time-management and communication skills with the ability to collaborate when needed
Problem solving ability to use judgement and exercise discretion while making decisions
Ability to work effectively and calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment
Collaboration Skills
Integration and partnership with the head athletic trainer and head strength coach is key to this position
Can work together with a team of specialists: Medical doctors, Surgeons, Dentists, Dietician, etc.
Candidate will work closely and in cooperation with equipment staff
Understands the parallel of working with other hockey operations staff
Track record/work history of relationship building with elite athletes
