Nature of Work

Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director, the Recreation Superintendent shall have the responsibility for maintaining the day-to-day programming and related business operations of the Parks & Recreation Department. This position performs planning, implementation, coordination, and supervision of recreation programs, events and activities, including planning, scheduling and implementing recreational activities; recruits, coordinates and directs the activities of regular, temporary, contract and volunteer staff; prepares program budgets and monitors expenditures; assists the rental, scheduling, use and maintenance of recreation facilities; and performs related work as required.

**Regular, predictable and punctual attendance is required.

Essential Functions

Plan, organize, and implement recreation programs by overseeing a variety of sports, cultural, educational, partner and general recreation programs and events.

Work independently and be responsible for overseeing programs at designated locations. Includes setting up and take down at facilities and areas for special events, including weekends, holidays and evenings.

Coordinate, plan and implement departmental marketing needs across team and with other departments and partners.

Leadership and direction in the development of short and long term plans; gather, interpret, and prepare data for studies, reports, and recommendations.

Establish and maintain cooperative planning and working agreements/relationships with local community businesses, service organizations, governmental agencies and youth program/ sports organizations.

Monitor the scheduling and reserving of YMCA, picnic shelters, and all other special use requests park areas.

Recruits, hires, trains, and coordinates and directs activities of regular, temporary, contracted and volunteer staff, related to programs, events, parks and rangers.

Prepare written documents, statistical reports, work orders, time sheets, schedules, press releases, brochures, calendars, program rosters, etc. Prepares program plans and requirements in advance for budgetary recommendations; prepares reports describing and evaluating programs at completion of activity and identifies methods and areas to improve.

Provide recommendations/ input on operational issues, personnel matters, and capital projects.

Assist Director with capital projects and projects engaged through bonding and grant funding.

Research and pursue alternative funding sources including local fundraising opportunities, private, state, and federal grants.

Assist with all departmental operations including answering phones, collecting registrations or ordering supplies, books facility rentals, park maintenance and other routine and non-routine tasks.

Conduct work in all kinds of weather: pleasant, inclement and hazardous.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Required

Bachelor's degree in Administration, Recreation, Parks and Leisure studies, Marketing, Communications or a related field.

Minimum 3 years of experience in the field of parks and recreation management.

OR

Any combination of related education and/ or work experience totaling 7 years.

Valid State of Ohio Driver's License.

Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) credential preferred but not required.

Daytime, evenings and weekends and holiday working hours will be required at times.

Knowledge of:

Recreation, cultural and social needs of the community.

Procedures for planning, implementing, and maintaining a variety of recreation programs and events through community participation.

Principles and practices of organization, administration, and personnel management.

Marketing and communication strategies and software (i.e., Canva, Hootsuite, social media applications)

Modern office practices, procedures, methods and equipment.

Standard business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals.

Budget creation and implementation.

Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. Environmental Education

Design, develop, and implement recreation programs suited to the needs of the community.

Working Conditions:

Work is often performed in a standard office environment; however there are many outside meetings and other park related functions.

While performing the essential functions of this job, is regularly required to sit; use hands to grasp, handle, or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; read and write; keyboard; and occasionally lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

Work is occasionally performed in an outdoor environment both within and outside the City limits. The employee will be exposed to loud noise, mechanized equipment, dirt, dust, snow, heat, chemicals, and foul odors.

Work requires sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
