Overview
Project Director for Modern Niagara’s Major Projects team in Ottawa. The Project Director leads all aspects of Modern Niagara’s Major Projects, with responsibility for P&L, HR, and safety within their division. They will build and lead a team aligned with our core values, contribute to strategic planning, and help scale operations in line with company growth.
Responsibilities
Assist to create a culture where the behaviors of the core values are communicated and expected from all employees, and core values are displayed in all interactions both internally and externally.
Support the organization in instituting a culture where the Specific Methodologies and Consistency recipe (SMaC) becomes the standard operating procedure; will use the framework for operations at all levels including forecasting, teamwork and safety – apply the SMaC Recipe to daily tasks.
Champion safety across all staff, aiming to maintain or exceed TRIF ratings.
Collaborate with the executive team to develop a unified “One Modern” model.
Promote learning, development, and continuous improvement; ensure all staff have PDPs and career development plans.
Provide strategic leadership and contribute to long-term planning.
Scope of Role
Financial Oversight: Final authority on scope, budgets, and scheduling from kickoff to commissioning. Responsible for execution budgets, change order pricing, and monthly forecasts.
Scheduling: Directs management and operations to ensure timely project completion within budget.
Planning: Develops processes to flag risks and delays affecting deliverables and costs.
Complexity & Decision Making
Leads resolution of complex issues requiring deep industry and company knowledge.
Develops methods and evaluation criteria for projects and teams.
Makes high-impact decisions affecting project and company success.
Prepares and manages budgets, monitors assets, and ensures financial targets are met.
Leadership & Relationships
Mentors and evaluates team members including PCs, PMs, and CMs.
Builds client relationships and drives business development.
Coordinates with suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring quality and safety on-site.
External decisions influence long-term organizational goals.
Qualifications and Experience
BS degree in construction management, architecture, engineering or related field or equivalent experience in the field.
Minimum 15 years of experience working as a Sr. Project Manager, Construction Manager, or Leader in a Construction, Manufacturing, or Business related field.
Vast experience in reading and interpreting construction drawings and documents.
Computer literate in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and computerized scheduling packages.
Management experience in the areas of hiring, firing and performance appraisals.
Advanced knowledge of construction management processes means and methods.
Expert knowledge of building products, construction details and relevant rules, regulations and quality standards.
A track record of building successful teams, effectively motivating people and maintaining effective relationships with clients, subtrades and staff.
Excellent leadership skills and ability to effectively lead a team.
Ability to prioritize and delegate duties as necessary.
Competent in conflict and crisis management.
Ability to give clear orders and work instructions, explain complex information to construction workers and clients, and discuss technical details with other building specialists and professionals such as architects.
Proven confidence and success to address budget matters and communicate both issues and successes with senior management team.
Bilingual in both official languages (English and French) is an asset.
