Example of Duties Acts as Park Manager in his/her absence.

Assists in the supervision of all park staff and performs management functions including scheduling, assigning work, evaluating performance, approving leave requests, recommending and conducting training, recommending and administering discipline, maintaining employee relations, motivating staff, and addressing employee concerns, as directed or assigned by Park Manager.

Assists Manager in creating job lists and project schedules.

Trains employees in proper operational procedures and safety; analyzes and resolves work problems.

Provides safe, clean, inviting parks for visitors and employees consistent with established operational standards.

Works with Park Manager in establishing priorities, projects, and work flow; evaluates effectiveness of operations and initiates adjustments as needed (e.g.

new procedures, time frames, reporting, etc.). Assists the Park Manager in developing, administering, and managing the budget for assigned Park.

Initiates purchase of materials and supplies; accounts for park revenue.

Coordinates with appropriate personnel within Metro Parks in relation to resource management, design, special events, district wide projects, etc.

Welcomes visitors, provides information and assistance to park visitors, and responds to visitor questions.

May represent Metro Parks with local neighbors, within the community, and in court appearances when needed.

May serve as a liaison with law enforcement agencies and political jurisdictions.

Coordinates and works with Assistant Manager - Park Operations.

Assists in the management of the safety function at assigned Park; addresses employee safety concerns.

Uses appropriate strategy to address conflicts among co-workers; understands role within the overall organizational structure of Metro Parks; willingness and ability to make decisions at times that may be unpopular with park staff.

Uses leave judiciously and in accordance with policies and procedures.

Demonstrates consistent attendance.

Works schedule to meets the operational needs of Metro Parks and does not negatively interfere with communication and daily operation on both the individual park and district-wide level.

Writes incident reports and monthly park reports; reviews and critiques incident reports and activity logs of Ranger staff.

In tandem with the Park Manager, oversees the volunteer and interpretive programs of assigned park; may conduct or assist in interpretative programs.

Directs and performs Ranger duties and activities including providing information and assistance to visitors, enforcing Metro Parks' rules and regulations, responding to accidents and emergencies, and administering first aid.

Develops and maintains effective working relationships with local police and fire departments, service organizations, and the general public; promotes Metro Parks through public contact.

Assists staff in maintenance of parks, grounds, and buildings/facilities; may apply pesticides and fertilizer, if licensed/certified to do so.

While assisting visitors, assesses visitors' needs, provides direction, options, or solutions as the situation presents.

May serve as a Field Training Officer or Background Investigator, as assigned.

May assist with the development and presentation of in-service Ranger, Maintenance, or Naturalist training.

May assume responsibility or provide support for other Parks and facilities as assigned.

Performs special projects or other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications Education/Experience: Associate's degree in natural resources, environmental science, parks and recreation, or related field preferred.

Demonstrated experience in park operations, some supervisory experience desirable, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated skill in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment.

Excellent customer service, communications and interpersonal skills.

Language Skills: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, local law enforcement agencies, community/citizens groups, other public agencies, etc.

Ability to prepare meaningful, concise and accurate reports; establish effective working relationships as supervisor of a work unit; ability to use a two-way radio.

Team-Oriented: Works on a team.

Outstanding customer service, communications and interpersonal skills.

Attendance: Being present at work is an essential function of the position.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action, apply management principles to solve practical, everyday work problems; ability to define problems, collect data and draw valid conclusions.

Licenses, Registrations: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate within twelve (12) months of employment/appointment to position.

Possession of valid standard first aid and CPR cards within six (6) months of employment/appointment to position.

Possession of a valid Ohio driver license, with a driving record that is insurable by Metro Parks' insurance carrier, and ability to conform to the established driving standards policy.

May be required to obtain a pesticide applicator's license.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, talk and hear, operate a two-way radio and light motorized equipment, sit, work with hands, lift, drive park vehicles, ride bicycles, operate off-road vehicles, and golf carts, etc.

The employee is frequently required to use hands to complete reports, use personal computers, etc.

Work Environment: While performing the regular duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, patrolling the parks.

The employee spends a portion of their time working in the shop and/or office.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Other: Knowledge of safety practices and procedures, building and grounds maintenance, basic landscaping and horticulture, department policies and procedures, management, budgeting, inventory control, public relations.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, subordinates, the general public, local law enforcement agencies, other public agencies, etc.

Candidate must satisfactorily complete a background investigation.

Required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
