Summary: Works under the leadership and guidance of the classroom teacher or acting teacher to provide appropriate supervision and responsive care for children in a safe environment and cooperatively with staff to actively support the development (cognitive, emotional, social, and physical) of children.

Essential Job Functions:

Adheres to applicable federal, state, local, and agency guidelines, policies, and regulations.

Maintains appropriate care and supervision of the children in all settings (indoor and outdoor)

Maintains a healthy and safe physical environment

Interacts with children in a developmentally appropriate, responsive and timely manner

Implements both child-guided and teacher-guided learning strategies throughout the daily routine, including large group, small group and one-on-one settings

Attends to multiple children in a group setting maintaining awareness of group dynamics and consistently responding quickly and directly to children's needs, desires and verbal and non-verbal messages

Facilitates children's development of emotional regulation and social competence by using positive proactive strategies and by expressing respect and acceptance of children

Assists with personal hygiene of children such as diapering, feeding, toileting, hand-washing

Assists in maintaining overall organization and cleanliness of classrooms

Asks for guidance and assistance from teacher or acting teacher when questions arise

Attends meetings and training related to position responsibilities

Maintains confidentiality and exercises sound judgment regarding the sharing of information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively and interact appropriately with adults and children in one-to-one and group settings

Ability to maintain focus and attention to individual children as well as the group of children in a busy preschool classroom

Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team

Ability to take initiative and be resourceful

Ability to adjust to ideas, activities and best practices as well as variable classroom settings, routines and procedures

Must conduct self in a professional and treat others in a respectful manner

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Must be physically and mentally fit to provide developmentally appropriate care for and supervision of young children Must have the physical abilities and stamina to participate in children's play and sustain active work throughout the day. Work with children requiring:

Ability to walk or run quickly

Ability sit on the floor or in child-sized chairs for extended periods of time

Ability to bend at the waist, kneel or crouch to maintain eye contact with children

Ability to walk on rough or uneven ground

Ability to lift children

Ability to work in cold or hot outdoor conditions

Ability to maintain the safety of the environment and children through visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile senses

Must be able to move quickly and react calmly in response to an emergency

Must exhibit good judgment in matters concerning the health and safety of children
