Job Summary
Perform surgical pathology specimen examination and processing of those specimens.
Responsibilities
• Assist with surgical specimen set up and examination; enter data into LIS.
• Accession specimens.
• Prepare correct cassettes.
• On selected cases and under the supervision of a pathologist, dictate the specimen examination report, examine the specimen, and submit it for histological embedding. The cases which may be grossed by a person in this position include: specimens requiring gross only, hernia sac, vas deferens, fallopian tube (for sterilization), appendix, tonsil, arterial plaque, biopsies (GI, GU, etc) that require verification and transport to cassettes, gallbladder, amputation (non-neoplastic), singleton placenta, POC, vascular thombi, and foreskin.
• Following completion of gross examination and dictation, enter cassette numbers into LIS, collect and store retained specimens, and clean up accessioning area.
• Proof read gross examination dictation and correct.
• When time permits, help out in all areas of histology lab.
