Description
POSITION PURPOSE:
Performs various clinical, microscopic and bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Receives or obtains specimens for analysis and applies techniques used in fields of bacteriology, parasitology, hematology, serology, chemical and morphological examinations and records test results in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory agency requirements (FDA, AABB, CLIA, etc.) to achieve the best quality patient care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate from an approved Medical Laboratory Technician school
Experience with the use and limitation of laboratory equipment and apparatus
Familiar with standard laboratory methods and procedures for handling pathological tissue and material for bacteriological examination
Good working knowledge of various fields of specialty in the laboratory
Must be able to share evening and weekend call, with response time within 20-30 minutes
Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred

Will have access to the facility 24 hours a day.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
Enters data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage.
Provides technical information about test results to physicians, family members and researchers.
Collects and studies blood samples, to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques.
Handles infectious material to protect all laboratory personnel, collects blood and other specimens under aseptic conditions.
Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction.
Performs documentation requirements and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
Performs and records Quality Control data and document corrective actions to facilitate accuracy of clinical testing and reporting of patients results.
Maintains responsibility for accuracy of examinations and analysis to assist physicians in making accurate diagnosis and management of diseases.
Records accurate test results and take care of expensive scientific laboratory instruments.
Analyzes patient tests and enters results into Hospital Information System to generate reports for patients chart.
Maintains working knowledge of all phases of laboratory work; technical and otherwise, as done in the hospital, and apply that knowledge in daily work according to CLIA guidelines.
Performs and records routine daily maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
Operates, calibrates and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis, such as computer-controlled and other analyzers.
Sets up, cleans and maintains laboratory equipment.
Follows HIPAA regulations and ensures that the confidentiality of patients medical, personal, financial records, employee records, and organizational records is maintained.
Participates in FCH committees, quality assurance, performance and quality improvement initiatives, and activities which support the facility and department operations.
Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of FCH operations and requirements of the FCH Compliance Program. Including but not limited to:
The Compliance Policy.
Completes all on-line training annually and as assigned.
All department and organization-wide policies.
Considers the impact of regulations such as Critical Access Hospital requirements, along with Federal and State of Nebraska regulations and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance.
