Position Description Advertised Job Summary Under the supervision of the SCIAA Director, the South Carolina State Archaeologist shall manage the Office of State Archaeologist, represent the interests of archaeology in the state, conduct archaeological research in the state, and advise the State Historic Preservation Office as requested.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience * Requires a master's degree and five years of experience in an area of research specialty.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications * Doctoral degree in Anthropology/Archaeology,. * 5 years of experience in program management.

* 5 years of experience conducting archaeological research in the southeastern US.

* Experience writing and administering grants, established relationships with and working knowledge of South Carolina's professional archaeological community.

* Capable of conducting and reporting on geophysical surveys, experience with GIS and knowledge of proper curation and collections management practice.

* Extensive knowledge of Historic Preservation law and CRM practice, extensive experience working with federal and state agencies, the general public, Indigenous nations, and other stakeholders in the region's history.

Job Duties Job Duty Manages the SCIAA Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA), including the State Archaeological Site Files and State Curation Facility.

Develops plans, submits grants, and administers budgets in support of OSA.

Supervises the State Site Files Manager, State Collections Manager, and other OSA personnel as needed.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 30 Job Duty At the request of the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, ensures the adequacy of archeological research and the resulting reports.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Represents the interests of archaeology to the USC campus and in the wider state with public outreach (public talks, artifact ID, events promoting archaeology), advising public and private entities and citizens about law and practice regarding archaeology, and liaison with relevant public and private entities (such as Council of South Carolina professional Archaeologists, SCDNR Heritage Trust, Commission on Minority Affairs, Archaeological Society of South Carolina, Historic Camden). Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 25 Job Duty Designs, conducts, and reports on archeological field or laboratory investigations on behalf of and in the best interests of the State.
