Job Summary

The Assistant Basketball Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Basketball Coach with all facets of the program; to include organization, development, recruiting, and leadership of a highly competitive Division Il basketball program in support of the mission and core values of Tuskegee University. The Assistant Men's Basketball Coach supporting the Head Coach by coaching student athletes, recruiting, monitoring student athlete academic progress, scheduling, managing travel and scholarships and overseeing the discipline, conduct, and image of the student athlete.

Essential Job Duties

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Recruit quality prospective student-athletes and ensure timely submission of their academic records for admissions. Participate in recruitment and designation of scholarship athletes

Plan coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NCAA and Conference regulations

Coach team members individually and in groups; and demonstrate game techniques. May manage a designated skill development area or group of positions

Develop and recommend game strategy and position assignments

Monitor the purchase of uniforms, equipment and supplies, including accountability for expense control and administration of the sport's budget

Coordinate with the Athletic Business Office the planning of recruiting and team travel

Participate in the selection and fitting of team equipment

Promote the athletic program and specific sport through community events, public speaking, fundraising, and marketing

Ensure adherence to all Association, Conference, and University rules by athletes and supporting staff

Monitor academic progress and status of team members, implementing action plans through appropriate staff when needed

Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student athletes to support the image and reputation of the athletics program

Provides reports and documentation hen required by the Director of Athletics and/or the Head Men's Basketball Coach

Conduct video analysis and instruction as a teaching and preparation tool

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)

Bachelor's degree

One year of experience as a head coach or assistant college at the collegiate level

Experience in recruiting

Physical Demands

Active Participation in Practices and Drills: Expected to actively participate in practices, demonstrating drills and techniques. This involves a considerable amount of walking, running, jogging, jumping, and other dynamic movements on the court

Demonstrating Skills and Techniques: Must possess the physical dexterity to demonstrate basketball-specific drills and techniques effectively. This can involve shooting, dribbling, passing, and showcasing footwork and defensive stances

Physical Exertion and Lifting: Need to lift and move equipment. This can range from moderate to heavy exertion, with requirements sometimes including lifting up to 25 pounds to shoulder height or 50-80 pounds to waist height.

Travel Requirements: Significant travel responsibilities for scouting, recruiting, and accompanying the team to away games. This requires being able to sit for extended periods of time, as well as navigating airports and transportation hubs.

Extended Hours and Irregular Schedules: Basketball seasons are demanding, and frequently work long and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. This necessitates the physical endurance to maintain a high level of activity and focus over extended periods

Being Able to Withstand Environmental Conditions: Work may be performed in indoor gymnasiums and potentially outdoors. May be exposed to varying weather conditions and environments with different noise levels
