Title Behavior Support Paraprofessional
Primary Purpose:
Assist teachers with behavioral and instructional support. Assist teachers in the preparation and management of classroom including diffusing disruptive student behavior to refocus and transition students into classroom activities. Work directly under the supervision of a certified teacher and/or campus administrator.
Qualifications/Education/Certification:
Associate's degree, 48 college hours or an Educational Aide certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work with children with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to respond to the needs of children
Ability to assist in behavior management and intervention
Ability to assist instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
Ability to work well with children
Ability to communicate effectively
Some experience working with children who exhibit behavior problems.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
Model behavioral techniques including positive behavioral intervention and reinforcement strategies
Support classroom teacher and related services staff in managing student behavioral needs
Collect data on student performance as related to IEP goals, objectives, and behavior intervention plans
Participate in student planning meetings to coordinate behavioral therapy goals within the educational program
Assist in training staff on the implementation of student behavior intervention plans
Assist teacher in preparing and presenting behavioral skill lessons
Student Management
Implement student behavior intervention plans, emergency intervention plans, and behavioral techniques which may include principals of Applied Behavior Analysis, Integrated Play Groups, Picture Exchange Communication Systems, or other methodologies deemed appropriate by the District
Intervene in emergency situations involving aggressive or uncontrolled behavior of identified students
Students may become physical, evasion and physical intervention may be required dependent on student needs
Assist in supervising behavior students throughout the school day, inside and outside classroom; this includes but is not limited to, lunchroom, bus, and job site
Keep administrator informed of special needs or problems of individual students
Other
Attend training in non-violent intervention techniques including Crisis Prevention and Intervention
Assist with routine record keeping
Follow behavior plans as directed by teacher and ARD committee
Attend ongoing training and professional development
Participate in team meetings.
Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned
Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
Adhere to the district's safety policies and procedures
Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business
Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned
Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

Working Conditions:
Mental Demands:
Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written), maintain emotional control under stress, follow behavioral intervention plans and procedures, follow district policy and procedure.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; avoid physical incidents through evasive techniques; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
