Summary of Position Works primarily with assigned area and other STEM departments to procure supplies, chemicals, and biological materials as well as operate and maintain equipment for teaching and research labs.
Ensures proper receiving, distribution and storage of specialty chemicals and other items.
Manages ordering, receiving, storing, issuing, preparing and maintaining an inventory of items for laboratory personnel.
Works with the university's Environmental Health and Safety to minimize environmental safety and health risks.

Works with vendors to obtain professional service agreements for equipment.
Receives and processes faculty/student requests for laboratory items and supplies.
Assists with delivery of orders.
Places supply, instruments, and service orders.
Maintains and operates some instruments.
Manages business and fiscal functions as assigned.
Plans and determines budget allocation.
Develops, recommends and implements business operations policies and procedures.
Manages expense accounts and supervises maintenance of fiscal controls.
Recommends purchases and expenditures.
Reconciles and approves charges, invoices, and payments.
Resolves fiscal, accounting, and business-related problems and inquiries.
Prepares and processes budget transfers.
Submits billing requests for instrumentation use.
Coordinates and maintains business and fiscal records.
Works with faculty users of the labs to determine supply inventory, place orders, receive shipments, and assist with distribution and storage.
Maintains inventory records; verifies, updates, and reconciles inventory information and Safety Data Sheets; performs physical inventory of labs and reconciles records; determines proper storage for supplies; ensures hazardous materials are stored safely in the labs.
Works with EHS to coordinate pick-up and delivery of waste from the labs.
Other Functions and Responsibilities:Obtains telephone quotes; selects supply sources and makes purchases within purchasing authority; prepares specifications for material and products; obtains specific product or equipment requirements from users; operates some common equipment.
Works with principal investigators, teaching lab coordinators, lab-prep student workers, TA's/graduate assistants, instrumentation specialist and maintenance personnel to configure, install, assemble or repair labs and equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned and/or required that are within the level of responsibility for this classification at the discretion of the supervisor.
Equipment Operated:Computer and all other standard office equipment; laboratory fume hoods/anemometer; dry ice maker; liquid nitrogen system and dewar; molecular biology instrumentation deionized water system; compressed gas cylinders; hand-truck, drum dolly, and pallet jack; specialized lab equipment and small hand-tools.
Work Schedule:Typically, Monday through Friday.
Must be able to respond to after-hours and weekend situations.
Supervision may be exercised over graduate associates, graduate assistants, teaching assistants, and/or student employees.

Chemical and biological terminology; chemical safety; inventory control; record keeping procedures; requisitioning, handling, storing, and issuing laboratory chemicals and supplies.
Storing, issuing, shipping and receiving materials and supplies; applying purchasing procedures; applying inventory control methods; operating material handling equipment; and biological instruments; entering and retrieving data using a computerized records system.

Minimum Qualifications:At least a bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline and at least six months of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:At least two years of work experience in chemical or biological procurement, as well as at least one class in organic chemistry.
