GENERAL DESCRIPTION Under immediate supervision of the Supervisor III - Facilities Maintenance, performs various preventive maintenance and repairs on small and large commercial heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and related components.

Work involves the application of mechanical and electrical skills to maintain and repair associated equipment.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED The Air Conditioning Specialist I position exercises no supervision.

The Air Conditioning Specialist II position may act as a lead worker over lower-level staff.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on building heating and air conditioning systems including centrifugal and reciprocating chilled water systems, water pumps, cooling towers; replace bearings on related equipment, air handling units, and gas fired boiler heating systems, rooftop package units, split systems, mini-splits, and VRF or VRV systems.

Change A/C compressors and all electric controls.

Leak checks the entire system.

Work independently on a variety of commercial equipment with programmable automated controls and EMS system.

Remove and replace heating and cooling components in City building A/C systems.

Troubleshoot and maintain complex electrical systems to include related switchgear.

Works with voltages up to 480 volts.

Operate a City vehicle daily to travel to all City owned buildings and other locations owned or leased by the City.

Air Conditioning Specialist II Performs highly skilled, specialized work in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and related components.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Air Conditioning Specialist I Knowledge of: Principles, practices, materials, processes, tools, and safety involved in A/C related electrical troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.

Servicing and repair requirements of building A/C control systems.

General safety procedures and workplace safety practices.

Skill to: Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Operate tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to: Work in physically demanding environments and under adverse weather conditions.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Air Conditioning Specialist II Knowledge of: Advanced practices, processes, materials, and tools of HVAC preventive maintenance and installation.

Diagnostics and troubleshooting for service, controls, and piping of multiple system configurations.

General principles of system diagnostics and preventive maintenance.

Skill to: Safely use a variety of tools, equipment and materials common to the area of assignment.

Apply sound judgment in resolving HVAC-related problems.

Use a broader range of tools, systems, and techniques for effective maintenance and repairs.

Ability to: Collaborate with internal departments and external contacts in a professional manner.

Lead, manage, and perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division's mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.

Experience and Training Guidelines: For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels.

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through: Air Conditioning Specialist I Experience: One (1) or more years of work experience in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and related components is preferred.

Previous experience with refrigeration systems is preferred.

Education/Training: A High School diploma or a GED is required.

License or Certificate: A valid Texas driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Air Conditioning Specialist II Experience: Five (5) or more years of experience equivalent to that of an Air Conditioning Specialist I for the City of Abilene or in a similar position is required.

Five (5) or more years of advanced service and repair techniques of building A/C systems is preferred.

License or Certificate: An Environmental Protection Agency certification card is required.

A Certification of Completion for Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery for refrigerants is required.

A License through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is preferred.

Special Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to occasionally work from a bucket lift truck reaching heights of 40 feet and higher.

Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, electrical hazards, and mechanical hazards.

Ability to travel to different sites.

Must be available for after-hours and on-call response duty.
