SUMMARY OF WORKING AS A COOK: The Cook at Hammitt Schools is responsible for preparing meals for the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program for the children and employees of The Baby Fold along with preparing any requested items for meeting and agency events or parties.
LOCATION: Split between 108 E Willow St (Hammitt on Willow) and 612 Oglesby (Hammitt on Oglesby), Normal, IL
SCHEDULE: Working mostly before and during school hours.M - F, 6:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (end shift at 1 p.m. during some summer weeks)
PAY: $17+/hr, paid over school breaks and holidays, according to the cook schedule.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Food Preparation:
• Follows approved recipes as assigned. Identifies problems related to achieving the desired quality and uses problem solving procedures to resolve the issues. Communicates deviations needed to crew leader or supervisor.
• Follows established portion control measures to control food costs and assure compliance with USDA standards.
• Organizes and schedules tasks so that meals are prepared in a timely manner.
• Prepares items for next day as needed.
• Pulls stock and thaws frozen items for next day meals.
• Prepares food for special occasions as assigned.
• Checks and logs temperature of food before it leaves the kitchen to be distributed to students and staff. Notifies supervisor of any deviation.
2. Sanitation:
• Maintains high standards of personal hygiene. Follows hand washing protocol. Practices standards of dress (clothing, shoes, hair restraint, gloves, etc)
• Maintains a clean and sanitary work environment,; follows guidelines to ensure compliance with sanitation requirements.
• Follows standard procedures for cleaning equipment; utensils and food preparation containers; plates, silverware, and serving containers; and work area.
• Maintains a valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate.
3. Safety
• Operates all equipment according to manufacturers' directions with emphasis given to safety guidelines. Notifies crew leader or supervisor of any malfunction, damage, or loss of equipment.
• Checks hot holding equipment, ovens, microwaves, and milk service units to make sure equipment is empty before turning on. Ensures hot holding equipment, ovens, microwaves, and milk service units are empty and turned off before leaving for the day.
4. Meal Delivery:
• Portions and wraps food, packages meals, and/or serves it directly on plates for students and staff. Places food trays into warmers for off-site delivery service and ensures appropriate temperatures for serving.
• Transports meals between locations throughout the day.
• Distributes "grab 'n go" breakfasts for the School Breakfast Program.
• Distributes school lunches at assigned school location and clean-up as needed at that location.
• Checks and logs temperature of food prior to serving. Notifies supervisor of any deviation.
5. Food Storage:
• Labels and keeps food items stored properly.
• Helps with stocking and ensures that food items are properly labeled and rotated.
• Notes temperatures of refrigerators and/or freezers at assigned locations and enters on log sheets. Informs supervisor or crew leader of any deviations from norm and/or food safety requirements.
6. Records:
• Completes production sheets after every meal.
• Records any deviations from the menu.
7. Quality Improvement: Contributes to quality improvement through active participation in Quality Improvement activities.
Requirements
1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
2. High school diploma or equivalent required.
3. Valid Illinois Food Handler Certificate required or able to obtain within 30 days of employment.
4. Previous experience in general food service required. Experience in an institutional setting is preferred.
5. Valid driver's license required for transportation of meals, supplies and donations to other locations.
6. Good interpersonal skills.
7. Ability to read and follow recipes/menus.
8. Must pass necessary background checks.
10. Demonstrated competence in serving a culturally diverse population. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.
Salary Description
$17.00+/hour, 37.5 hr work week
