Description

Primary Function:

Under the supervision of the Director of Optical Program & Development, the Optician is responsible for fitting patients with eyeglasses. Additionally, the Optician administers analyzes and interprets prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists; will take eye measurements to insure proper lens placement in the eyeglass frame, and verifies the accuracy of the finished product.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides excellent customer service through exercising knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Measures patients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.

Verifies that finished lenses are ground to specifications.

Prepares work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.

Assists patients in selecting frames according to style and color, and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.

Maintains records of patient prescriptions, work orders and payments.

Performs administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping.

Maintains merchandise presentation in the Optical area by stocking and rotating merchandise, removing damaged or out-of-date goods, setting up, cleaning, and organizing product displays.

Recommends specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to provide patients his/her best visual outcomes based upon prescription written.

Sells goods such as spectacles, sunglasses, and other goods related to eyes in general.

Adjusts eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands.

Evaluates prescriptions in conjunction with clients' vocational and avocational visual requirements.

Repairs damaged product as necessary.

Maintains high standards ofclinical hygiene at all times.

Respects and protects the patients' rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patients' best interest with full consideration of their legal rights.

Demonstrates initiative in continuously improving personal knowledge, skills and work experience; and in improving departmental functioning.

Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers and management and functions as an effective team member.

Receives constructive feedback in a positive self-developmental manner and is receptive and approachable.

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Educational requirements:

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; three years apprenticeship on-the-job training or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience;

Licensure:

Requires American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification within 12 months of hire into the position
