Clinical Instructor in Veterinary Surgical Services
Job Summary
The Clinical Instructor in Veterinary Surgical Services will join a team of veterinary surgical clinicians and professional technical staff to deliver surgical and anesthesia services to patients brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for veterinary healthcare services.
The clinician will have a direct supervisory role in the junior surgery lab:
aiding with anesthetic planning and the safe execution of spays and neuters on shelter cats and dogs from the local shelter, that are performed by the veterinary students (30%);
responsible for teaching, assisting and supervising senior veterinary students in the small animal surgery service and safely preforming anesthesia on client owned small companion animal patients (30%);
have primary care responsibility for small animals seen in the Community Practice service for annual exams, wellness checks, puppy evaluations and the wide variety of outpatient care services/ etc. generally provided by the community practice service while teaching and supervising senior veterinary students on the clerkship (30%);
and serve as a floater providing relief/coverage for faculty in radiology and small animal emergency care when needed and when available (10%).
Essential Job Duties
• Must have a commitment to the University's tri-partite mission of teaching, research, and service.
• Participate in clinical instruction for veterinary students, graduate students, and interns.
• Participate in classroom and laboratory instruction with a focus on surgery and anesthesia • Coordinate the junior Surgery course including a course syllabus and a teaching schedule that engages the surgical and anesthesia team of clinicians and professional technical staff
• Coordinate with engagement of the surgical team, the IACUC protocol to accommodate more advanced surgeries for the students close to the end of the junior surgery course
• Participate in teaching anesthesia in clerkship courses, clinical service and in the junior surgery course
• Serve as a secondary clinician in Community Practice when needed particularly when the junior surgery course is not operating
• Must demonstrate creative scholarship and collaborative activities
• Participation on college and university committees
• All other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree
• 2-3 years of experience in a veterinary hospital setting
• Proficiency in the use of surgical, anesthesia, and diagnostic imaging equipment
• Familiarity with sedation and patient handling during surgical and imaging procedures
• Interest in teaching or academic involvement
