Expected Starting Hourly Range: $20.68 - $40.25
Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities in the multi-functional operations of the Manatee County highway and storm water systems. Works with assigned crew on a variety of infrastructure construction projects, such as roads, storm drains, and bridges. Follows all established safety standards and procedures.
Note: Job title and salary will be determined based on experience and skill level.
Working Conditions
Indoor/Outdoor situation. Performs strenuous work in varying and adverse weather conditions. Traverses uneven or rugged terrain. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Regularly required to drive county vehicles as part of the duties of the job. Able to climb and descend equipment and ladders. Able to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach. Position requires visual acuity and depth perception, as well as ability to hear and identify sounds.

Essential Functions

Applies knowledge of and skill in maintenance and/or construction principles and practices to safely and efficiently performing assigned duties.
Works with assigned crew on a variety of infrastructure construction projects, such as roads, storm drains, bridges, marine construction, water distribution, back flow prevention, and sewer transmission.
Follows all established safety standards and procedures.
Technician I:
Performs routine skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities, such as cleaning ditches and culverts, preparing surfaces, operating mechanized equipment, basic vehicle maintenance, and flagging operations.
Technician II:
Performs moderately difficult skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities, such as cleaning ditches and culverts, building catch basins, installing drainage lines, operating power tools and mechanized equipment, basic vehicle maintenance, and flagging operations.
Technician III:
Performs difficult and moderately complex skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities, such as cleaning ditches and culverts, building catch basins, installing drainage lines, operating power tools and mechanized equipment, basic vehicle maintenance, and flagging operations. Trains and assists less experienced technicians.
Sr Technician:
Performs a variety of difficult and complex skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities. Inspects pavement surfaces and storm water structures. Acts in a lead capacity, assigning and monitoring daily work activities and training less experienced technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
Technician I:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior experience in highway or drainage maintenance and construction desired.
Must possess and maintain valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B OR obtain CDL permit prior to employment and obtain the CDL within one hundred twenty (120) days of hire.
Technician II:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Meets Skill Set Level I and Level II (or equivalent) career ladder requirements as specified on current Public Works Maintenance Technician Career Ladder Matrix.
Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B and Tanker Endorsement.
Technician III:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Meets Skill Set Level I, Level II, and Level III (or equivalent) career ladder requirements as specified on current Public Works Maintenance Technician Career Ladder Matrix.
Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B and Tanker Endorsement.
Sr Technician:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) or more years of construction and/or maintenance work experience.
One (1) year lead or supervisory experience.
Meets Skill Set Level I, Level II, Level III, and Senior Level (or equivalent) career ladder requirements as specified on current Public Works Maintenance Technician Career Ladder Matrix.
Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with Hazardous Waste CDL Endorsement or Advanced Maintenance of Traffic Certification.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
