The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an Academic Advisor I to provide support to first-year and transfer students in Engineering.

The position will encompass both academic advising (75%) and other student engagement and support activities (25%), which will be tailored based on School needs and employee interests.

These additional activities may include working with student organizations, spearheading student engagement activities, assisting with career advising, or other similar activities.

The successful candidate will be passionate about student success, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to create relationships with students and staff that promote engagement and retention.

Responsibilities: 1.

Provide academic advising and guidance to approximately 200 engineering students.

Help students create course plans that are consistent with their aspirations and strengths while adhering to degree requirements and institutional policies.

2.

Proactively identify and provide support to students who are not meeting the academic expectations of the program or the university.

Recommend support services to students, including referrals to other offices, as required.

3.

Develop content and lead orientation sessions for incoming freshmen and transfer students.

4.

Provide support related to career planning and continuing education.

Help students identify potential employers, prepare and refine resumes, and conduct practice interviews.

Discuss potential paths for graduate education.

5.

Plan and participate in student engagement activities, such as welcoming and on-boarding events, as appropriate.

6.

Perform other duties as assigned.

(Annual Salary: $37,500 - $48,000) Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required.

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Student counseling and advising degree in counseling or advising or a related field preferred.
