Job Description

The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill an Environmental Scientist III position in the Division of Water Quality. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.

Principal Duties

Preparing UPDES permits

Conducting compliance evaluation inspections

Authoring inspections and audit reports, letters, technical reports and other science based communications

Conducting compliance assistance outreach and education

Maintaining permit databasesIdeal Candidate

The ideal candidate:

Has at least 5 years of experience working in an environmental field ideally including regulatory experience

Has knowledge of the Clean Water Act and the Utah Water Quality Act, NPDES/UPDES regulations and associated permits

Has experience with construction site stormwater management and erosion and sediment control

Is a good communicator, both verbally and written

Can manage multiple complex tasks

Can work independently as well as in a team environment

Is adaptable and can adjust to changing priorities

Can produce quality work and adhere to deadlinesPreferences

Preference may be given to candidate with the following:

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a related engineering or science field. Preference may be given to those with a Master's Degree and/or Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist license.

OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.Job Series

The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $29.73 - $44.66 per hour, an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.98 - $52.56 per hour or an Environmental Scientist IV with a salary range of $39.02 - $58.61.

Work Location

This position may be eligible for an in-office, remote or hybrid/flexible work schedule after several days of in-office training during your first weeks of employment. Our office is located 195 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah.
