This position is not a State of Michigan position; it is a Michigan School for the Deaf contracted position.

Description:

Interveners are those ancillary staff with special training to provide linguistic access to a

student with an inability to access the general curriculum, the environment or process information both

visually and auditorily.

HOURLY RATE:

$18.00-$22.00 Per Hour Worked

Responsibilities:

An intervener is a staff position with deaf or blindness for all or part of the instructional

day, as determined by the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The decision to designate an

Intervener is based upon the level of support needed by a student to participate effectively in his/her

instructional environment(s) as described by the IEP. The intervener works cooperatively with parents and a variety of direct service providers and consultants including: classroom teachers; teachers of children with hearing impairments, or severe disabilities; speech therapists; occupational and physical therapists; orientation and mobility instructors; and other professionals as well as teacher aides.

Duties:

• The intervener's specific duties will be individualized according to the needs of the child and the

profile of the current educational placement.

• Primary responsibility is to provide direct support to a student with a deaf or blindness during all or

part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the student's IEP.

• Follows the student's IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by

related service staff.

• Becomes proficient in students' individual communication methods and strategies.

• Creates instructional materials as needed.

• Accompanies and supports the student during community-based instruction.

• Maintains communication between parent and school, and keeps a daily log on information about the

student and his/her activities.

• Participates in IEP meetings and student staff meetings.

• Participates in the assessment of the student and in the preparation of IEPs, progress reports,

behavior plans, data collection, and other documentation for program monitoring.

Supervisory Structure:

Works in a team model and is directly supervised and evaluated by teacher and

disability-specific staff (staff with expertise in visual and/or auditory impairments).

Minimum Qualifications:

• Completion of a 2-year program of students in area of Intervener preferred.

• Applicants must exhibit the ability to communicate in American Sign Language Proficiency

Instrument (ASLPI) rating of 3+ or above.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

1) Strong ASL/English communication, public relation, and interpersonal skills.

2) Ability to write reports and correspondence consistent with the duties of this position.

3) Ability to effectively communicate through American Sign Language (ASL) and written form to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.

4) Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.

5) Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints.

WORK HOURS:

Monday thru Thursday 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Fridays 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Educational environment with extensive interaction with students. May be exposed to infectious diseases.

CERTIFICATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

• CPR/First Aide Training

• CPI

• Drug Testing

• Fingerprint/Criminal Background

Additional Requirements and Information:

The Michigan Department of Education/Michigan School for the Deaf will not hire and employ individuals who have been convicted of a "listed offense" pursuant to the School Safety Legislation Acts (Public Acts 129, 130, 131 and 138 of 2005). The "listed offense" are defined in the Sex Offenders Registration Act (Section 2 of Public Act 295 of 1994). Fingerprint records are required prior to being hired.
