Nature of Work

Plant Technician Apprentice - $17.38 per hour

This is an entry-level class in the Water Plant series. The purpose of the class is to maintain water plant facilities, fixtures, and equipment. The class is responsible for scheduling or performing preventive maintenance, installations, repairs, and reports. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Requires the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.

Plant Technician C - $20.33 per hour

The purpose of the class is to maintain water plant facilities, fixtures, and equipment. The class is responsible for scheduling or performing preventive maintenance, installations, repairs, and reports. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Requires the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.

Plant Technician B - $21.99 per hour

The purpose of the class is to maintain water plant facilities, fixtures, and equipment. The class is responsible for scheduling or performing preventive maintenance, installations, repairs, and reports. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Requires the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.

Plant Technician A - $24.73 per hour

The purpose of the class is to maintain water plant facilities, fixtures, and equipment. The class is responsible for scheduling or performing preventive maintenance, installations, repairs, and reports. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Requires the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.

Essential Job Functions

Plant Technician Apprentice, "C", "B", "A" positions:

Schedules and performs preventive maintenance on plant fixtures, systems, and equipment in accordance with prescribed schedules.

Troubleshoots malfunctions and repairs; reports major malfunctions to supervisor for further action.

Performs troubleshooting and repair of single phase, three phase, low voltage control systems, process control equipment and Scada systems.

Removes and replaces equipment or components; installs new equipment or components.

Performs operator tasks as assigned including taking readings, adjusting parameters, and other operations tasks.

Maintains plant facility and grounds including building maintenance, mowing grass, cleaning area of trash and debris, and other maintenance.

Maintain satellite facilities such as plant facilities.

Maintains logs of maintenance actions and prepares periodic or special reports.

Monitors condition of vehicles assigned; performs minor maintenance and service; reports major malfunctions to supervisor.

Attends staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical classes to improve technical skills.

Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying.

Call back status is required during emergency conditions.

Inspects, sets-up, and otherwise prepares new equipment to be placed in service.

This position is subject to assigned on call rotation.

Minimum Requirements

Plant Technician Apprentice

Requires a high school diploma or GED. Requires a minimum of one year in the areas of electrical and mechanical abilities, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair water and wastewater treatment and processing equipment. Prefers knowledge in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), relay logic, pumps, motors, gearboxes and all other equipment as it relates to water and wastewater processing. Prefers a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement at time of hire. Must possess ability to read and interpret electrical schematics. Confined Space Entry Certification within 18 months of hire (City can provide training but preferred at time of hire.) Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

Plant Technician C

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a minimum of two years in the areas of electrical and mechanical abilities, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair water and wastewater treatment and processing equipment. Prefer knowledge in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), relay logic, pumps, motors, gearboxes and all other equipment as it relates to water and wastewater processing. Must possess ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.

Requires 2,080 hours of experience in water treatment. Must possess a pump certification within 12 months.) Must possess a confined space certification within 18 months. Requires a Utilities Maintenance Level III certification at time of hire. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must obtain a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement within 18 months of employment. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

Plant Technician B

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a minimum of three years in the areas of electrical and mechanical abilities, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair water and wastewater treatment and processing equipment. Prefer knowledge in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), relay logic, pumps, motors, gearboxes and all other equipment as it relates to water and wastewater processing. Must possess ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.

Requires a pump certificate at time of hire. Requires a confined space certificate at time of hire.

Requires 6,240 hours of experience in water treatment. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must possess a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement at time of hire. Requires a Utilities Maintenance Level II certification at time of hire. Must possess a backflow certification within 18 months. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

Plant Technician A

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a minimum of four years in the areas of electrical and mechanical abilities, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair water and wastewater treatment and processing equipment. Prefer knowledge in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), relay logic, pumps, motors, gearboxes and all other equipment as it relates to water and wastewater processing. Must possess ability to read and interpret electrical schematics. Requires a pump certificate at time of hire.

Requires a confined space certificate at time of hire. Requires a backflow certification at time of hire.

Requires 10,400 hours of experience in water treatment. Requires a FW & PCOA Pump Maintenance and Electrical Safety Course and FW&PCOA Troubleshooting and Motor Controls Certification at time of hire. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must possess a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement at time of hire. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

Health Insurance: Health Insurance is effective after 90 days of employment. Employees may elect a PPO or HMO plan. Provider is BCBS of Florida.

Dental Insurance: Dental Insurance is effective after 90 days of employment. Employees may elect a PPO or HMO plan. Provider is United Health Care.

Vision Insurance: Vision Insurance is effective after 90 days of employment. Provider is United Health Care.

Employee Wellness Center: Free to employees, dependents, and retirees who are enrolled in the City's health insurance. The EWC provides free onsite Health Risk Assessments, doctor appointments, basic lab work, and some generic prescriptions.

Retirement: A (401A) non-contributory defined contribution pension is provided for general employees. The City contributes 5%.Certified Police employees join the Chapter 185 Plan which requires employees contribute a predetermined percent into the plan. Certified Fire employees participate in a plan which exceeds the requirements of Chapter 175 and which requires employees contribute a predetermined percent into the plan.

All employees may elect to tax defer an amount allowed by the IRS to a 457 deferred compensation account

Life Insurance: $50,000.00 policy - 50% at age 70 for general employees, police and fire - 100% premium paid.

Bereavement Leave: 24 hours of leave with pay.

Holidays: 11 paid holidays.

PTO Sell Back program: Employees are eligible to sell PTO time back to the City, a maximum of 2 times per fiscal year for a total of 160 hours. Employees can only sell back as much PTO time as they have actually used in the previous 12 months. Employees covered by a CBA may sell time a maximum established by their written bargaining agreement.

Computer Purchase: The City will finance the employee's purchase of an approved computer system up to $1,000.00. Total of loan divided by 39 payroll deductions.

Fitness Programs: The City will pay 50% payment of the monthly fee for the employee and spouse for one fitness center each. Participating centers are: Not the Norm Crossfit, Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness, and Infinity Fitness.

Safety Shoes: The City will pay up to $150.00 per year for the cost of one pair of approved safety shoes/boots for those positions requiring safety shoes/boots.
